TopTop's mini-game social bet: 22M downloads, Japan revenue peak in 2026

Newborn Town's TopTop bets mini-games plus voice chat can build a new social app for MENA and Japan

TopTop (Newborn Town / MX INNOVATION)

The betThat a game-first social app — mini-games plus face-free voice chat — could grow a new audience in MENA and then Japan, where conventional social apps had stalled.Scaling

What the business is

TopTop is a free mini-game social app: quick casual games (quiz, one-stroke drawing, Uno-style) paired with face-free voice chat and UGC, monetized through in-app purchases and tipping.

How it started

Newborn Town (via Singapore developer MX INNOVATION), which had built MENA social apps, launched TopTop in April 2025 as a game-oriented social app. It combined popular casual games with audio-first social features, betting that play would lower the barrier to meeting strangers.

What happened

TopTop grew steadily through 2025 — 5M+ downloads in each quarter — and won "Best Social Game Platform" at the Sensor Tower APAC Awards 2025 (announced February 2026). Its strongest market was Saudi Arabia, which produced 39% of revenue. From early 2026, Japan became a second growth engine: downloads hit a record 190K in January and revenue a record $650K in March, unusually late for a mobile game.

How it ended up

Still scaling as of mid-2026. In Japan, where growth accelerated from early 2026, over 70% of downloads came from paid advertising (64% paid display), raising the question of whether the audience sticks once user acquisition spend normalizes. Newborn Town continues to push offline and UGC initiatives around the app.

Background

TopTop is a game-oriented social app launched in April 2025 by MX INNOVATION, the Singapore developer behind Newborn Town's MENA social business. It pairs short casual games (quiz, one-stroke drawing, card games) with face-free voice chat, so users meet each other by playing rather than by browsing profiles.

The formula worked first in the Middle East: Saudi Arabia became TopTop's largest market, generating 39% of revenue in the year to April 2026, and the app won "Best Social Game Platform" at the Sensor Tower APAC Awards 2025. Globally it recorded more than 22 million downloads by Q1 2026, with 5M+ in every quarter since launch.

Japan emerged as a second growth engine from early 2026 — unusually late for a mobile game, which typically peaks at launch. Downloads hit a record 190,000 in January 2026 and revenue a record $650,000 in March 2026. The catch: more than 70% of Japanese downloads came through paid advertising, led by paid display (64%).

TopTop's bet is that play can build a social graph where profile-based apps stalled, and that MENA's appetite plus Japan's late-blooming interest can carry the app past the paid-acquisition treadmill.

What has to be true

  • MENA social apps were crowded, so TopTop differentiated by making gameplay the social entry point.
  • Voice chat without cameras lowered the barrier for conservative and privacy-sensitive users.
  • Short, repeatable games created frequent sessions and natural room-hopping behavior.
  • Newborn Town already knew how to operate and buy users in the MENA market.

What can be applied

When an app category is saturated, changing the entry point — game first, chat second — can open markets where the conventional product already peaked.

Aftermath

As of June 2026 TopTop continues to scale: Sensor Tower's report highlighted rising Japan MAUs and revenue through Q1 2026, with Newborn Town expanding UGC, offline events and tipping features. Its dependence on paid acquisition (70%+ of Japan downloads) remains the main open question for whether growth is self-sustaining.
