Toss's bet: one financial super app for Korea — first profit in 2024, then record 2025

Viva Republica built Toss from a free transfer app into Korea's financial super app; first annual profit in 2024, record 2.7T won revenue in 2025

Viva Republica (Toss, 토스)

The betThat Koreans would consolidate their financial life into one app — free transfers to win users, then bank, securities and ads monetize them — betting scale beats fees.Scaling

What the business is

South Korea's largest financial super app: P2P transfers, payments, Toss Bank, Toss Securities, Toss Insurance, plus merchant payments and advertising.

How it started

Founded 2013 by Lee Seung-gun as Viva Republica; it launched simple mobile remittance in 2015 and grew into Korea's default money-transfer app before adding loans, securities and insurance, and in 2021 Toss Bank — a mobile-only bank that attracted ₩7T in deposits within three weeks of launch.

What happened

Aggressive expansion produced heavy losses (consolidated net loss of ₩216.6B in 2023) and a 2022 regulatory sanction over unauthorized use of 292.8M electronic receipts plus card transaction data. The company then leaned on consumer-services monetization, which grew to 58% of total revenue in 2024, and turned its first annual profit.

How it ended up

First annual profit in 2024 (net ₩21.3B, operating ₩90.7B on ₩1.96T revenue), then record 2025: revenue ₩2.7T (+38%), operating profit ₩336B (+270%), net profit ₩201.8B (+847%), users past 30M; an IPO, possibly in the US, is under preparation.

Background

Viva Republica was founded in 2013 by Lee Seung-gun and launched Toss's simple mobile remittance service in 2015, when Korean banks still charged transfer fees and took days. The bet was that Koreans would consolidate their entire financial life into one app: free transfers to win mass adoption, then bank, securities, insurance and ads monetizing the same users — scale, not fees, as the moat.

Toss grew into Korea's default money app, then added lending, brokerage, insurance and, in 2021, Toss Bank — a mobile-only bank that pulled in ₩7T of deposits within three weeks of launch. The expansion was costly: 2023 brought a consolidated net loss of ₩216.6B, and regulators sanctioned the company in 2022 over unauthorized use of 292.8M electronic receipts and card transaction data.

The model turned around when consumer services — remittances, brokerage, payments, advertising, tax services — grew to 58% of revenue in 2024. That year Viva Republica posted its first annual profit: ₩21.3B consolidated net income on ₩1.96T revenue (+42.7%), with 28M members and 24.8M monthly actives.

In 2025 profitability compounded: revenue ₩2.7T (+38%), operating profit ₩336B (+270%), net profit ₩201.8B (+847%), users past 30M, and CEO Lee's February 2025 plan targets half the user base international by 2030 with a possible US IPO.

What has to be true

  • Korean retail finance was fragmented and fee-heavy, so a free, fast transfer app could win mass adoption quickly.
  • Each added service — bank, brokerage, insurance — raised engagement and data, letting ads and lending monetize the same users.
  • Toss Bank's mobile-only model plus super-app distribution pulled ₩7T in deposits within three weeks, proving cross-sell.
  • The 2022 data-privacy sanction and 2023 losses forced a profitability discipline that made 2024's turnaround real.
  • The explicit 2025 plan — 50% international users by 2030 and a possible US IPO — sets the next growth leg.

What can be applied

Free loss-leading services buy distribution, but a super app only proves itself when the same users are monetized across many services — scale alone is not the model.

Aftermath

As of April 2026 Toss is scaling: users surpassed 30M at end-2025, it recorded a second consecutive profitable year with record results (revenue ₩2.7T, operating profit ₩336B, net profit ₩201.8B), FacePay is expanding offline across convenience-store chains, and an IPO — possibly in the US — is under preparation.
