What the business is
Workplace-relationship and knowledge-sharing platform that started as a mentor-matching app and later integrated with Slack and Microsoft Teams.
The bet
That enterprises would pay for an AI tool that connects employees to mentors and institutional knowledge inside Slack and Teams.
Starting capital
A $1.5M round raised from 2020; investors included Portland Seed Fund, Tapas Capital, DNX Ventures and ScoutFund
How it started
Sarah Haggard, a ten-year Microsoft senior product marketing manager, struggled to find a mentor and built a mentor-matching app. Tribute won the top prize at the 2020 Seattle Angel Conference and Haggard raised the first tranche of a $1.5M round during early COVID.
What happened
Tribute signed Microsoft, Sonos, Zillow, Remitly, Reckitt and the University of Washington. A 2022 funding round fell apart, leading to a smaller cash infusion, and Tribute lost its chief technologist and head of customer success. It pivoted to an AI-assisted knowledge-sharing resource integrated with Slack and Teams.
How it ended up
In December 2024 the founders announced the shutdown, offboarded customers with their data and insights; Haggard hasn't settled on her next step but wants to stay in knowledge management.
What has to be true
Enterprise buyers expressed strong interest in the platform, but contracts were never signed before the cash ran out.
A 2022 funding round collapsed, so the company operated on a smaller raise and lost key staff.
Haggard says false-positive signals from enterprises can keep a startup running longer than it should.
What can be applied
Enthusiasm from enterprise buyers is not revenue; a startup should price in how long 'exactly what we need' can last without a signature.
Aftermath
As of 20 December 2024, Tribute had closed, offboarded its customers and provided them their data. Haggard said the field still lacks a holistic solution for internal communications and expertise sharing, and wondered if someone else will solve it. The account of why deals stalled is the founder's own.
