How it started
CEO Ryo Itai, a Honda R&D engineer on robots and electric mobility, pitched UMIAILE through Honda's IGNITION new-business program. He tested hand-held scale models on the Arakawa river for about a year, first envisioning electric surfboards and then fishery support, until conversations with earthquake researchers reoriented the business toward ocean observation. UMIAILE was founded in January 2025 with co-founders Tokio Unno (CTO) and Ryohei Nakajima (CSO/COO).

Background
UMIAILE is a Tokyo-based ocean robotics startup spun out of Honda's IGNITION new-business program and founded in January 2025. Its bet is that a fleet of small, solar-powered autonomous boats can make ocean data collection cheap enough to sell at scale — a 'satellite at altitude 0m' for the roughly 70 percent of Earth covered by seas that satellites cannot observe beneath the surface.
The core product is the UMIAILE ASV, an autonomous surface vehicle using hydrofoil-based attitude control inherited from Honda's UNI-CUB and ASIMO work. Lifting the hull out of the water cuts drag, so the boats can run long observation missions on solar power, go where crewed vessels cannot, and cost a fraction of the survey ships whose construction runs into the tens of billions of yen.

What has to be true
- The wedge is cost: a solar-powered ASV costs a tiny fraction of a survey ship whose construction runs to hundreds of billions of yen, so ocean observation becomes affordable enough to run as a fleet.
- Technology moat: applying Honda's UNI-CUB/ASIMO attitude-control know-how to hydrofoil stability is an unusual pairing that competitors would have to replicate.
- Market timing: earthquake research, blue carbon measurement and marine resource management all demand cheaper ocean data, and no satellite can see underwater.
- Corporate backing: Honda participating in the round gives credibility and access, while investors get an early position in ocean data infrastructure.

As of 16 October 2025, UMIAILE was deploying the ¥1.575 billion seed round across five areas: marine robotics technology, field demonstration expansion, prototype development toward mass production, public-private research projects, and hiring. Long-term targets are durability in harsh offshore conditions, annual production of thousands of ASVs, and swarm control of unmanned boats collecting real-time ocean data. Honda, which backed the venture through IGNITION, remains an investor; it is based in Tokyo's Sumida ward and is recruiting hardware, software and business-development engineers.
