What happened

By opening day Verkor had secured more than €3 billion from industrial and financial backers, including a consortium of banks and public institutions such as the European Investment Bank and the French government. The factory, designed for 16 GWh a year initially with a 50 GWh target by 2030, was inaugurated in December 2025, with first commercial deliveries planned for 2026 starting with cells for the Alpine A390. It opened as rivals stalled: Northvolt collapsed in 2025 and ACC paused two German projects, leaving Verkor among the few European startups actually producing cells.

Background

Verkor was founded in 2020 to close a gap the European EV boom had exposed: no domestic lithium-ion cell champion existed, so automakers depended on Asian supply. Its bet was that a startup could industrialize low-carbon cells at gigawatt scale in France and become a credible European alternative.

The company proved the technology on a 24/7 pilot line at its Verkor Innovation Centre in Grenoble, producing tens of thousands of cells, then broke ground on its first gigafactory at Bourbourg near Dunkirk in November 2023. By December 2025 it had secured more than €3 billion from industrial and financial backers, a bank consortium, the European Investment Bank and the French government, with Renault as anchor customer and 20% shareholder.

The gigafactory was inaugurated in December 2025 with an initial design capacity of 16 GWh a year and a 50 GWh target by 2030, creating about 1,200 direct jobs. First commercial deliveries are planned for 2026, starting with cells for the Alpine A390. It opened into a shaken market: Northvolt went bankrupt in 2025 and the ACC joint venture paused two German projects, thinning the field of European producers actually making cells.

The bet is not yet won — ramping to 50 GWh against weak European EV demand and Chinese competition is the open question — but Verkor has what most of its failed peers lacked: an operating plant, locked customer demand and an owner who needs the cells.

Aftermath

Deliveries begin in early 2026, first for the Alpine A390 and Renault FlexEVan, with about 1,200 direct jobs planned and capacity growing from 16 GWh toward 50 GWh by 2030. Research has moved from the Grenoble Innovation Centre to the plant. The main risk is demand: weak European EV uptake and cheaper Chinese cells could make the 50 GWh ramp harder than the opening ceremony suggested.
