What the business is
Singapore maker of modular vanadium-based redox flow batteries for long-duration energy storage
The bet
Modular vanadium redox flow batteries with a 25-year expected life can win long-duration storage, backed by a 200 MWh production line and expansion into new countries
Starting capital
$10M Series A led by Real Tech Holdings, with SEEDS Capital, Wavemaker Partners, Sing Fuels, Michael Gryseels, İnci Holding, Pappas Capital and Carbon Zero Venture Capital
How it started
VFlowTech was established in 2018 by Dr Avishek Kumar (CEO) and Dr Arjun Bhattarai (CTO) with Entrepreneur First, with support from SG Innovate and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
What happened
By February 2023 it had commercially deployed 30 kWh and 100 kWh units for residential use and had produced an MWh-scale system for large microgrids. Deployments ran through joint partnerships in Africa and Southeast Asia, with two batteries due on Singapore's Pulau Ubin that year. On 2023-02-07 it announced a $10M Series A to set up 200 MWh of production capacity and scale manufacturing of its 250 kWh modular systems, expand into Turkey, the US, Japan and India, intensify R&D and strengthen management. A binding framework agreement with İnci Holding would help bring the technology to Turkey.
What has to be true
Customers asked for storage for EV charging, peak shifting, grid services, gated communities and telecom towers
A non-degrading electrolyte supports a long 25-year life, which suits long-duration storage
Production capacity of 200 MWh is needed to supply grid-scale projects beyond pilots
Partnerships such as İnci Holding give entry to markets like Turkey
What can be applied
Energy storage startups often use their first institutional round to move from pilots to a first production line, and the performance claims in the article are the company's own.
Aftermath
As of 2023-02-07, VFlowTech had a $10M Series A, deployed small residential units and an MWh system, and planned a 200 MWh production line and expansion to four new markets.
