What the business is
Via is a New York transit-software company that works with cities and campuses; Citymapper is a London urban mapping app with about 50 million users.
The bet
Citymapper's rider data and app can show Via where people are trying to go, helping cities position vehicles and message riders.
Starting capital
Terms undisclosed; a mix of cash and stock, which sources said was well below one publication's reported $100 million
How it started
Citymapper launched in 2011 with an app that combined public transit, walking, cycling, scooters and taxis. TechCrunch says its $40 million Series B in 2016 valued it above $365 million, and founder Azmat Yusuf focused on quality over growth. Investors including Balderton, Index Ventures, Benchmark and DST put in about $52 million, plus around $8 million from UK crowdfunding.
What happened
TechCrunch says Google and others caught up with Citymapper's key features. It mothballed its own transport service, introduced ads, and offered a paid Club tier and a Pass with a travel card. Its accounts showed an operating loss of 8.1 million pounds in 2021 against 7.3 million the year before on stagnant revenue. It had long been rumored to be seeking a buyer, and reports of a Via deal surfaced in February 2023.
How it ended up
Via announced the deal on 2023-03-16. Citymapper's employees, except founder Azmat Yusuf, join Via; Yusuf becomes a transition advisor. Citymapper continues as a standalone service for now. TechCrunch sources said Citymapper investors mostly did not get their money back and that it was effectively a washout.
What has to be true
Ramot said in February that Via would use its new funding to make acquisitions that fill out its transportation technology stack.
Citymapper's rider data shows demand, and Via says it can use it to position vehicles in real time.
Citymapper had been rumored to be seeking a buyer for years and had not managed to turn early traction into income.
Via had moved away from running transit services toward technology others use, especially after buying Remix in 2021.
What can be applied
A consumer app that is loved but cannot out-run platform giants may end as a data asset for a B2B buyer, at a price well below its fundraising history.
Aftermath
As of 2023-03-16 Citymapper continues as a standalone service for now while Via plans to integrate its product and data into the Via platform. The final price, the integration results and the effect on Citymapper's ads and subscriptions were not reported.
