VibeShort bets AI short dramas beat live-action: 3.95M downloads, $1.46M in a month

HK startup Agile Quadrant's AI short-drama app VibeShort: 3.95M monthly downloads and $1.46M revenue by May 2026, then No. 7 in global short-drama IAP.

The betThat AI-generated short dramas at a tenth of live-action cost can fill the supply gap, monetize at ~$0.50 an episode, and win charts through heavy paid UA.Scaling

What the business is

VibeShort is a free-with-IAP short-drama streaming app whose catalog is mostly AI-generated live-action-style, 2D and 3D comic dramas, monetized through ~$0.50 episode unlocks, weekly and yearly subscriptions, and rewarded ads.

How it started

Agile Quadrant Media was incorporated in Hong Kong in October 2025 with a single app. VibeShort launched on the App Store on 2026-02-25, ran its first ads on 2026-03-22, and began sustained buying in early April. DataEye found a near-identical twin app, StoryReel, registered under a second Hong Kong shell and using the same code, content and pricing — evidence of a deliberate twin-brand strategy.

What happened

By 2026-05-27 Diandian counted ~3.95M downloads and ~$1.46M revenue in the trailing 30 days, and DataEye ranked VibeShort No. 5 in May overseas short-drama revenue after just two months of ad buying. Most titles are AI-generated 'human' dramas and comic dramas in werewolf, vampire and fantasy genres; episodes cost about $0.50 to unlock (350 coins for $3.49), with $19.99/week and $149.99/year subscriptions on top.

How it ended up

Still scaling: DataEye's July 2026 report ranked VibeShort No. 10 in overseas short-drama downloads (7M+, +74% MoM) and No. 7 in revenue at $7.4M monthly IAP, while sibling app StoryReel entered the download top 20 for the first time. The twin-brand structure carries ongoing platform-enforcement risk under Apple and Google duplicate-app rules.

Background

VibeShort is an AI short-drama app built by Agile Quadrant Media, a Hong Kong company incorporated in October 2025. Its bet was simple: generate dramas with AI instead of paying $200K-plus for North American live-action shoots, and use paid UA to push them up the charts. The app launched on the App Store on 2026-02-25 and began sustained ad buying in early April.

The numbers moved fast. In the 30 days to 2026-05-27, Diandian counted about 3.95M downloads (up 346.6% YoY) and roughly $1.46M in revenue (up 382%), and DataEye ranked it No. 5 in May overseas short-drama app revenue. Episodes cost about $0.50 to unlock (350 coins for $3.49), with weekly and yearly subscriptions on top; most titles are AI-generated 'human' dramas and comic dramas in werewolf, vampire and fantasy genres.

DataEye's analysis found VibeShort and a near-identical twin, StoryReel, registered under two Hong Kong shells with the same code, pricing and ad creatives — a deliberate twin-brand strategy to double reach from one codebase while hedging Apple and Google duplicate-app enforcement. By July 2026 VibeShort ranked No. 10 in overseas short-drama downloads (7M+, +74% MoM) and No. 7 in revenue at $7.4M monthly IAP, as AI dramas became the industry's fastest-growing supply.

What has to be true

  • The unit economics flipped the business: an AI drama costs roughly $13–20K versus $200K-plus for live action, so a newcomer could stock a catalog without venture-scale content budgets.
  • It monetized like the incumbents ($0.50 episode unlocks plus subscriptions) but won on supply speed — AI localization meant new titles could be produced and ad-tested in days, not months.
  • Heavy paid UA made the launch a distribution event: within two months of first ads, VibeShort was top-5 in overseas short-drama ad-creative volume alongside platforms buying for years.
  • The twin-brand structure (VibeShort/StoryReel) doubled market reach from one codebase and spread platform-enforcement risk — a hedge that only makes sense in a fast-moving window.

What can be applied

When content cost is the bottleneck, a 10x cheaper input plus aggressive UA can buy chart share fast — but easy supply invites clones, so speed wins the window and retention decides who keeps it.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 VibeShort is live and scaling: DataEye's July 2026 report kept it at No. 10 in overseas short-drama downloads (over 7M, +74% MoM) and No. 7 in revenue ($7.4M monthly IAP), with sibling StoryReel entering the top-20 download chart at No. 13. The app still depends on paid acquisition and AI-generated content — overseas short-drama IAP totaled $273M in July 2026, and AI drama ad materials grew from 2% of the top-100 in January to 16% in March. Whether the twin-brand model survives duplicate-app crackdowns, and whether users stay once spend slows, remain open questions.
