Yuanfudao Group (猿辅导集团) is a Chinese education-technology company; Xiaoyuan AI (小猿AI, formerly Xiaoyuan Kousuan) is its AI-native app for K-12 homework checking, photo search, diagnosis, explanation and practice.
How it started
Yuanfudao spent over a decade building K-12 tools: Xiaoyuan Kousuan for arithmetic practice and whole-page homework checking, and Xiaoyuan Souti for photo question search. Along the way it accumulated more than three billion items in its question bank, a knowledge graph of over ten thousand knowledge points and over thirty billion learning-behavior records. In April 2025, per Beijing News, the company renamed Xiaoyuan Kousuan to Xiaoyuan AI, an AI-native rebuild that folded in the two old products' capabilities.
What happened
The rebuilt app combines the self-developed Yuanli LLM with DeepSeek's reasoning to recognize handwriting and full pages, diagnose why a student erred, explain step by step, generate targeted practice and update an error notebook — the 'diagnose-learn-practice-test-review' loop for students, parents and teachers. Basic checking and answer features are free while deeper video and tutoring content sits behind VIP tiers. After the AI-native rebuild, Xiaoyuan AI ranked first among education apps in new users within about a month and entered China's top-10 AI apps by new downloads beside DeepSeek and Tencent Yuanbao. In the August 2026 chart it stood at No. 10 among education apps; by early September 2026 it hit No. 1 on the education free chart and No. 8 overall free, its first return to the overall top 10 since Xiaoyuan topped the overall free chart in 2024. A viral 'fish fry' phenomenon — college students joining elementary arithmetic duels — signaled how sticky the practice mechanics had become.

Background
Yuanfudao Group is the Chinese ed-tech company behind Xiaoyuan Kousuan, the arithmetic and homework-checking app that topped China's overall App Store free chart in 2024. In April 2025 it renamed the product Xiaoyuan AI and rebuilt it on an AI-native architecture, fusing Xiaoyuan Kousuan with the photo-search question bank of Xiaoyuan Souti. The bet: when generic large models make photo-answering easy for everyone, a decade of proprietary education data and a teaching-tuned model become the real product.

What has to be true
- Photo-answer and grading models became licensable commodities, so differentiation moved to data no rival can buy: question banks, error patterns and curriculum knowledge built over a decade.
- Xiaoyuan entered from the highest-frequency habit — daily arithmetic and homework checking — so the AI upgrade started with users who already opened the app every day, not a cold acquisition problem.
- The product loop converts a single query into diagnosis, explanation, targeted practice and review, which keeps the AI inside the learning process instead of one-shot answer retrieval.

Aftermath
As of September 4, 2026, Xiaoyuan AI held No. 1 on China's App Store education free chart and had peaked at No. 8 overall free (Diandian Data via ithome), after ranking No. 10 in 100EC's late-August chart. Yuanfudao kept extending beyond the phone: the Xiaoyuan AI learning machine carries the same diagnose-learn-practice-test loop into a dedicated device, and the company was pairing with partners such as Huawei's smart screens. The climb was read as proof that an education vertical could compete with general consumer apps once AI features became table stakes.
