Airtable is a no-code platform that lets teams build apps on spreadsheet-like databases.

Buying Dopt's onboarding-AI team outright gets Airtable's AI features to market faster than hiring one resume at a time.

Dopt had raised a $5.1M seed round in 2022 from Unusual Ventures, Designer Fund and angels; Airtable's acquisition price was not disclosed.

Dopt built tooling that helped startups design product-onboarding experiences, raising a $5.1M seed in 2022 with Unusual Ventures and Designer Fund among the backers. In early 2024 it introduced features for adding AI-based assistance tools to other services — which put it on Airtable's radar.

Airtable, coming off Covid-era hypergrowth and into the sector-wide slowdown, launched Cobuilder the week before the deal: describe an app in a Copilot-like chat and it gets built. Liu called the slowdown a 'gear shift' that forced the question 'what are the big bets that we want to make?', and argued resource constraints breed creativity. The acquisition closed in late June 2024 and was announced on July 30.

Dopt's service was wound down on August 15, 2024, and its team joined Airtable's AI group — the acquihire ended in absorption, not a scaled product.

Airtable bought a team, not a product: Dopt's onboarding service shut down 16 days after the announcement, with the payoff meant to arrive as Airtable AI features instead.

The deal was calibrated to a slowdown: with growth no longer free, Liu argued constraints force focus, and AI was the bet worth staffing first.

Dopt had just added AI-assistance features to its onboarding product — it sold at the precise moment that capability became scarce.

Onboarding-for-everyone is a vantage point: building first-run experiences across many products teaches how software should introduce itself, which is the craft AI interfaces needed.

When hypergrowth ends, an acquihire is a way to buy scarce capability instead of competing for hires one by one — provided you already know exactly which capability your next bet needs.

As of August 15, 2024, Dopt's service was wound down and its team was inside Airtable's AI group, tasked with bringing additional AI capabilities to market and building the user experience around them. Airtable, which Liu stressed had 'always continued to grow' through the slowdown, kept pushing the AI direction Cobuilder opened — with the Dopt team as part of the push.
