Zoho quietly launched Arattai in beta in 2021 amid the WhatsApp privacy-policy backlash, building an India-hosted, Tamil-named messaging app. It was barely marketed for four years, averaging about 300 downloads a day in India.

In late September 2025, ministers and business leaders publicly endorsed Arattai as a made-in-India alternative to WhatsApp. Downloads jumped 185x week-over-week and DAUs 40x (Sensor Tower); daily installs hit about 100,000. It reached 7.5 million downloads by October 3 and briefly took the No. 1 spot on both app stores.

The surge reversed within weeks: October downloads hit 13.8 million, then collapsed to 195,519 by November 4, and Arattai fell out of India's top 100 apps on both stores. Zoho said it was focused on the long term and kept building (encryption, super-app features).

截至2025年12月，Arattai仍运营，但已失去榜首位置：月活跃用户从10月的435万降至11月约409万。Zoho表示将继续投入——增加端到端消息加密、稳定基础设施、规划超级应用扩展——而非追逐短期热度。
