业务是什么
Camouflaj made narrative games — Republique (2013) and Marvel's Iron Man VR (2019) — for consoles and VR headsets.
The bet
Standalone VR needed premium exclusive content enough that Meta would buy the studios making it — and Camouflaj traded independence for a platform backer.
如何开始
Ryan Payton, previously creative director on Halo 4, founded Camouflaj in 2011-2012. 'Eventually shedding our independence was never the plan when I started Camouflaj back in 2011,' he wrote, 'but everything changed after we met the crew at Oculus Studios.'
发生了什么
Over the year before the deal, Payton became convinced that joining Meta let the studio fully commit to its long-term VR ambitions. Meta announced Camouflaj as one of three new Oculus Studios members alongside Twisted Pixel and Armature, all officially acquired, with terms undisclosed.
成立的前提
Meta confirmed outright acquisitions of all three studios, not mere publishing deals.
The prior Republique VR collaboration de-risked the purchase for both sides.
Payton stayed and immediately began a bigger project — the studio bought talent and pipeline, not just a back catalogue.
可以借鉴什么
For platform companies, content is the moat: when exclusive games decide hardware wins, buying the makers beats funding them.
后续
Iron Man VR shipped on Quest 2 on 3 November 2022, with Payton remaining as studio head and moving onto the unannounced project he described as Camouflaj's biggest game yet.
