Unified Women's Healthcare bought Gennev, menopause care's first startup exit

Gennev provides telehealth services and products for women going through perimenopause and menopause.

Dedicated menopause telehealth could become a real business for a condition every woman passes through and almost no clinic treats.

Jill Angelo spent more than 15 years at Microsoft in marketing and product roles before founding Gennev (as Genneve) in Seattle in 2016. The company began with sexual wellness and lubricants, then launched telehealth services in early 2019 to serve women navigating the hormonal transition and its health impacts.

By 2022 Gennev had raised $8 million, employed ten people plus more than a dozen contract obstetricians and gynecologists, and sold services and products directly to consumers while exploring insurance-network partnerships. Florida-based Unified Women's Healthcare — founded in 2009, operating the largest OB-GYN physician practice management platform in the US with more than 2,500 providers across 19 North American markets, alongside CCRM Fertility and maternity analytics company Lucina — acquired Gennev for an undisclosed sum, keeping it as its own health unit.

Acquired October 2022 — by Angelo's account the first exit for a company addressing menopause, which she predicted would validate that there is money to be made in women's health and bring more acquisitions to follow.

Gennev picked a condition with universal incidence and near-zero dedicated care — demand was certain while supply was absent.

The buyer's logic is continuum: adding menopause to fertility and maternity care completes the women's-health lifecycle under one platform.

The path — wellness products first, telehealth second — built revenue and patient trust before the platform-scale bet.

The first exit in a neglected category does double duty: it returns capital and re-prices every similar startup that comes after it.

As of October 2022, Gennev continued operating as its own health unit within Unified Women's Healthcare; Angelo predicted her exit would be the first of many in women's health.
