GenWise was a lifestyle app for India's senior citizens: a digital passbook, payment reminders, elder social networking and an AI-powered companion.

That Indian senior citizens would adopt a digital-first app for money, social life and health deeply enough to monetize — they didn't, and the app wound down.

$3.5M seed led by Z47, with DBR Ventures, Climber Capital and angels including Kunal Shah, ex-BharatPe Suhail Sameer and PharmEasy's Sidharth Shah.

GenWise was founded in 2023 by BharatPe executives Nehul Malhotra, Geetanshu Singla and Rajat Jain. It bid to make senior citizens digital-ready in financial management, social engagement and healthcare, offering a digital passbook, payment reminders, social networking for elders and an AI companion for conversation and emotional support.

The app saw modest growth in run time and claimed a user base of over 30 lakh elders, but the startup struggled with adoption and monetisation, per sources. It was selected for the Google for Startups Accelerator: Apps 2025 program focused on AI-powered solutions. Financially it never got close: FY24 operating revenue was INR 1 lakh against a net loss of INR 5.7 Cr, and in FY25 it booked a net loss of INR 12.1 Cr on a top line of INR 1 Cr. It handed pink slips to about 20% of its workforce in May 2025.

In December 2025 GenWise shut down operations, laying off most of its roughly 20 employees. Cofounder and CEO Nehul Malhotra said it had 'paused active operations as other strategic options emerged', without details; a person familiar with the matter told Inc42 it was looking for a buyout.

It is a complete failed-bet arc: founding team, funded wedge, growth claims, and a shutdown with dated financials.

The unit economics are on the record from regulatory filings: INR 12.1 Cr lost on INR 1 Cr of FY25 revenue.

It documents the seniors-digital thesis failing in India even with a fintech-experienced founding team and marquee angels.

A demographically obvious audience can still be a product graveyard: claimed reach is not adoption, and adoption is not willingness to pay.

As of 2025-12-09 GenWise had paused active operations, laid off most of its roughly 20-person team, and was evaluating strategic options including a possible buyout, per a person familiar with the matter.
