Ethan Bloch — who says Hiro was his 15th startup, after 13 failures and the roughly $230M sale of Digit — co-founded Hiro with Rushabh Doshi, a fellow Digit veteran. The pair kept the team to about 10 people, raised from Ribbit Capital, General Catalyst and Restive Ventures, and opened the product to users around November 2025.

Hiro launched its AI financial planning tool about five months before the deal and said it had helped clients plan and manage more than $1B in assets in that short span. The traction and the founders' record drew OpenAI, which had bought another personal-finance app, Roi, in Oct 2025 and was adding fintech talent around ChatGPT.

On April 13, 2026 Bloch announced OpenAI had acquired Hiro Finance; new signups stopped immediately, the product shut down on April 20, and all user data was deleted by May 13. About 10 employees joined OpenAI — a deal TechCrunch and others called an acquihire, since OpenAI's interest was the team and its financial-AI skill, not the app.
