Indie Hackers is a community and media website for indie developers and bootstrapped entrepreneurs: founders share real revenue numbers, share interviews and podcasts, and the website makes money from ads and sponsorships.

启动资金：No external funding; before the Stripe acquisition it was a bootstrapped community built from zero by Courtland Allen alone (he later called the company at that time a "tiny bootstrapped company" in the separation announcement).

起因

In July 2016, Courtland Allen wanted to do something no one was doing at the time: make businesses that "earn money from customers rather than fundraising" visible. He built Indie Hackers, published interviews with indie founders, and had them disclose real revenue. TechCrunch quoted his original words: "There were not many places putting profitable online businesses in the spotlight at the time."

Less than a year after the community launched, it produced dozens of founder interviews, with interviewees' monthly revenue ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars; the website's monthly ad revenue quickly reached about $6,000. In early March 2017, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison proactively sent an email with the subject "acquire indie hackers" (Allen recalled in an interview with Silicon Republic).

结果

Acquired by Stripe in April 2017, amount undisclosed; Allen's new title was "Indie Hacker at Stripe", and his younger brother Channing Allen joined as co-founder. Six years later, on April 5, 2023, the brothers separated the company from Stripe and re-operated it as a founder-owned independent company, with Stripe becoming a seed investor—MRR was exactly $0 at restart.
