Pieter Levels launched Nomad List in 2014 as part of a public '12 startups in 12 months' challenge, starting from a spreadsheet ranking cities for remote work; he built it solo, in public, with no outside money, and monetized with a low-friction paid community layer from 2015.

By 2017–2019 Nomad List had crossed $30K MRR as remote work went mainstream; COVID then spiked membership and chat usage, and Levels still refused to hire or raise. Competitors matched the data, but none matched the social graph, and Nomad List stayed the default index for where to live and work remotely.

Still running solo and profitable: publicly reported around $700K ARR in mid-2025 and roughly $38–42K MRR through 2025, part of a portfolio Levels said was making over $3M a year with zero employees and no funding.
