起因

Cathleen Kuo, a physician and the child of non-English-speaking immigrants who translated for her parents as a kid, co-founded Opalite in 2025 with Alex Mehregan, a former Apple engineer who worked on Siri and Apple Intelligence. They joined YC's W26 batch, launched publicly in early 2026, and went live with hospitals, community health centers, home health organizations and telehealth providers.

The pitch targets a real budget line: US hospitals spend up to $1–2M a year on interpretation and federal law (Section 1557 of the ACA) requires language access, while getting a human interpreter can take up to 30 minutes. Opalite charges about $2.95 per interpreted minute against a roughly $5.90 LanguageLine GSA benchmark, and its clinical evaluations reported 1 Spanish error versus 65–93 for certified humans. By July 2026 the company was used daily in 10+ states, with a large healthcare enterprise rollout coming within two months, and customer CIFC Health reported a 50% cut in interpretation costs.
