Pixxel was founded in February 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal while they were still undergraduates at BITS Pilani. The pair launched demo satellites in 2021 and 2022 and signed more than 60 customers — including India's agriculture ministry, BP and NASA — before the commercial constellation existed.

Google, Radical Ventures, Accenture, Lightspeed, Blume and growX backed a US$60M Series B, with a US$24M extension from M&G Catalyst and Glade Brook Capital Partners closing in 2024 and taking total funding to US$95M. The first three Firefly satellites launched on SpaceX's Transporter-12 on January 14, 2025, and three more followed on the NAOS mission in August 2025 — six satellites giving daily global hyperspectral revisit.

Pixxel's bet was that hyperspectral imaging — 150+ narrow spectral bands instead of the 8–13 of conventional multispectral satellites — is Earth observation's next big category. Most of the industry scans in broad bands; Pixxel argued the chemical signature hidden in narrow bands is what actually tells you about crop stress, water contamination, and mineral deposits, so it set out to build the highest-resolution hyperspectral constellation in existence.

The founders lived the problem: as final-year BITS Pilani students, Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal needed hyperspectral data for a crop-monitoring project and found nothing commercial at usable resolution or price. They founded Pixxel in February 2019, launched demo satellites in 2021 and 2022, and signed 60+ customers — India's agriculture ministry, BP and NASA among them — before the commercial fleet existed.

As of 2026 all six Fireflies are operating, data sales run through the Aurora platform, and the company won a US National Reconnaissance Office contract to feed hyperspectral imagery into the agency's remote sensing architecture. The bet is still being proven at scale — but Pixxel is now the reference point its 2019 competitors had to measure themselves against.

It is working toward an 18–24 satellite constellation, with next-generation Honeybee satellites extending the spectral range. Total funding stands at US$95M.
