Sileme (死了么, literally "Are you dead?") is a paid iPhone safety app for people living alone: set one emergency contact and check in, and after consecutive missed check-ins the system emails that contact, later adding SMS, so an emergency at home alone is not discovered too late.
Built by three part-time developers in under a month for about ¥1,500 (US$215); initial price ¥1, raised to ¥8 as server costs hit; first funding round later reported at roughly ¥7M.
起因
In mid-2025 the Zhengzhou-based project lead, Lu Gongchen, kept meeting the same ask in online communities: a lightweight safety tool for the millions of young Chinese who live alone in big cities. He and two friends built it part-time in under a month for about ¥1,500, launched it quietly on iOS in 2025 at ¥1, and saw little until 2026-01-10, when a social-media post about the app's name set Chinese feeds alight.
经过
The wave came with real costs: server bills jumped, so the team raised the price to ¥8 and rushed SMS alerts in. Investors circled — an early plan to sell 10% for ¥1M became talk of a near-¥100M valuation within days, and the team says it was already profitable. The blunt name also drew criticism, clones and copycat listings, and on 2026-01-15 the founder confirmed the original listing had been required off the stores. The team re-ran the name publicly — Demumu was chosen for the international rollout, and a user-naming drive later produced the warmer Chinese name 在么在么 ("Are you there?").
结果
Still running as of late May 2026, and growing up rather than sideways: Lu left his day job in February, incorporated a new Hangzhou company, closed a first round the founder puts at roughly ¥7M, and expanded the team to four. The product now pairs the app with a wristband for silent SOS and fall alerts, and a community pilot in Hangzhou's Zihuabu neighborhood has about 50 elderly residents checking in with social workers as their emergency contacts.
