Skydio is a Bay Area maker of autonomous drones selling to public safety, transportation, energy, construction and defense customers.

Enterprise and public-sector demand — 1,500 clients and growing — is worth more than the consumer market DJI dominates, and deserves all of Skydio's focus.

$230M Series E raised earlier in 2023.

Skydio sold the Skydio 2+ consumer drone in Starter, Sports, Cinema and Pro kits while DJI held the consumer market it had won on price. US government bans on DJI amid rising US-China tensions became, per TechCrunch, 'a large driver' of domestic security adoption of Skydio's systems — government contracts were 'an extremely enticing model' compared with consumer sales.

In February 2023 Skydio raised a $230M Series E. By August its enterprise book had reached 1,500 clients across public service applications, and founder Adam Bry argued the impact 'demands nothing less than our full focus and attention': 'Our drones are making the core industries that our civilization runs on — public safety, transportation, energy, construction, and defense — safer and more efficient.'

Consumer sales stopped on August 10, 2023: the Skydio 2+ Starter, Sports, Cinema and Pro kits came off the market, while the Skydio 2+ Enterprise Kit stayed on sale to business customers.

Government demand did what consumers wouldn't: bans on DJI drove US public agencies toward Skydio, making 1,500 enterprise clients the revenue base worth focusing on.

Bry framed the exit as commitment, not retreat — 'full focus and attention' — and the consumer kits came off the market the same day.

Consumer was unwinnable against DJI's prices, while government contracts were, as TechCrunch put it, an extremely enticing model next to consumer sales.

Existing buyers were not abandoned: repairs, warranties and spares were promised 'for as long as we can', protecting the brand's credibility with its new enterprise audience.

When a subsidized rival owns your consumer market but regulation bends demand your way elsewhere, sell where policy pushes the buyers — and stop funding the fight you cannot win.

As of August 10, 2023, Skydio sold only the Skydio 2+ Enterprise Kit to business customers while honoring its back catalogue — repairs, warranties and accessories for past consumer buyers. The company had exited consumer from a position of strength: a $230M Series E that February, 1,500 enterprise clients, and the DJI bans that kept steering American public agencies its way.
