Brothers Tobie and Jaime Morgan Hitchcock spent years building cloud SaaS systems — from golf-course engagement tools to job-candidate assessment platforms — and kept fighting database limits. Instead of choosing between SQL, document and graph databases, they started building a multi-model engine; the first HN launch in August 2022 ('SurrealDB – Document-graph database, for the realtime web') drew 190 points and 121 comments.

The open-source repo became the growth engine, and SurrealDB 1.0 shipped in October 2023 with 2.0 following in September 2024. In June 2024 the 32-person London company raised a $20M Series A led by FirstMark and Georgian. The company then repositioned around AI as an 'AI-native database' for agent memory, and in February 2026 raised a $23M Series A extension (Chalfen Ventures, Begin Capital) alongside the 3.0 general availability release, citing 2.3 million downloads and 31,000 GitHub stars.
