Hammouda and Amr launched Thndr in Egypt in late 2020 after it secured the country's first brokerage licence since 2008. Both had worked at Uber (Hammouda as Egypt general manager, Amr in Dubai operations) after investment-banking stints, and they were betting on a glaring gap: MENA holds about $500 billion in annual savings, yet under 3% of people in the region invest in financial assets, largely because opening an account was slow and expensive. Thndr's answer was commission-free trading with no account minimum, no deposit or withdrawal charges, and heavy education — simulators, articles, videos, webinars and daily newsletters — aimed at first-time investors.

In 2026 Prosus led a further $15.7M round — with Y Combinator, BECO, Endeavor Catalyst, JIMCO, Raba and Onsi Sawiris participating — bringing total capital to $37.76M for expansion focused on the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
