VAIA turns storm-felled Alpine wood into a regeneration business

VAIA is an Italian B Corp that turns wood from storm-felled and beetle-damaged trees into design objects — phone amplifiers, screen magnifiers, docking stations — and corporate ESG gifts.

Storm-damaged wood, upcycled by local artisans into objects people actually want, can fund forest regeneration and community revival.

Storm Vaia raged across Northern Italy's Alps from 27 October to 3 November 2018 — forestry body Sisef called it 'an unprecedented phenomenon in the last 50 years' — hitting 437 municipalities and 41,491 hectares of forest. Stefani, then 27, founded VAIA a year later: 'I spent 80 per cent of my childhood in the forest... Now, that connection is broken.'

The Cube phone amplifier was followed by VAIA Focus, a reclaimed-wood screen magnifier with artisan-crafted Fresnel lenses, packaged in geotextile recovered from the Presena Glacier in partnership with the Summit Foundation, and VAIA People, a docking station co-designed with 200 Scuola Italiana Design students from bark-beetle-damaged wood. Since 2023 it has run 'The Forest of Innovators' community events and sells corporate gifts reportable in sustainability reports.

Scaling: next target is biomaterials from the roughly 15 million olive trees killed by the Xylella bacterium in southern Italy.

The disaster created the inventory: millions of cubic metres of downed timber needed a use before it rotted.

Every product carries its story — the storm, the glacier, the bark beetle — so marketing and mission are the same object.

Corporate ESG gifting gives the model a B2B revenue line that grows without mass production.
