German bioenergy group that turns biomass into biodiesel and other fuels.

That the molecule it already makes for biodiesel can sell as a specialty-chemical feedstock — higher margins, fossil replacement, and a route Europe can scale.

Nearly €100M for the Bitterfeld plant

Verbio built its name as a bioenergy producer. As Europe hunted for low-carbon chemical feedstocks, CEO Claus Sauter pushed the group beyond fuels into higher-value molecules where margins are stronger and customer relationships more specialised.

Verbio developed the catalysts through Hungarian subsidiary XiMo, then built the Bitterfeld plant around ethenolysis — olefin metathesis, the chemistry behind the 2005 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — splitting rapeseed methyl ester into 1-decene and 9-DAME for lubricants, detergents, cleaning products and plastics. Co-Nobel laureate Richard R. Schrock called it meaningful to see the research reach industrial scale.

Europe's chemical industry is pressed by energy costs, low-cost competition and fossil-feedstock dependence; renewable carbon is one of the few answers that addresses all three.

Rapeseed methyl ester was already a Verbio product at scale — re-routing it into chemicals costs less than inventing a new feedstock position.

Owning the catalyst technology through XiMo gives Verbio control over the step that turns fuel stock into chemical stock.

Moving up the value chain shifts the company from commodity fuel margins toward specialised customer relationships.

The cheapest way up the value chain is a molecule you already make at scale — if you also own the catalyst that re-forms it.

The plant is commissioned but ramping gradually: production rises as customers qualify the new molecules for specific end uses, the familiar adoption path in specialty chemicals. Verbio reports enquiries from buyers in Europe, North America, South America and Asia, says the site adds about 50 jobs to reach roughly 130, and sees room to expand output if demand strengthens and its technology and feedstock base scale together.
