业务是什么
The largest US retailer and private employer, pushing into healthcare: clinics, telehealth, pharmacy, and now private-label prescription drugs.
The bet
That Walmart's scale plus a direct deal with Novo Nordisk can sell analog insulin at $73 a vial — up to $101 below branded — and still work as retail.
如何开始
Walmart had spent years pressing 'everyday low price' into medical care: a prescription program selling monthly supplies of many generic drugs for $4, 20 clinics beside its stores offering $30 annual checkups and $25 dental cleanings, and the May 2021 purchase of telehealth company MeMD. Its ReliOn private diabetes brand already sold an older insulin formulation for about $25 — one doctors and advocates said managed blood sugar swings less well than newer analogs.
发生了什么
Working directly with manufacturer Novo Nordisk, Walmart priced ReliOn NovoLog at about $73 a vial or $86 per pack of prefilled pens, available by prescription to adults and children from June 2021 and at Sam's Club from mid-July. EVP Cheryl Pegus said the gap to branded competitors runs as much as $101 per vial and $251 per pen pack, and framed the price point as something that could 'revolutionize the accessibility and affordability of insulin'.
成立的前提
Walmart's healthcare advantage is existing traffic: 14% of its shoppers have diabetes, so private-label insulin extends the store rather than opening a new market.
Private label flips the insulin pricing scandal into a wedge — Walmart doesn't need the branded margin, only the trips and loyalty the price buys.
Novo Nordisk gains a volume channel without cutting its own list prices, which is why a manufacturer cooperated while rivals offered only limited programs.
可以借鉴什么
A retailer's margin model can do what pharma politics couldn't: private label plus a direct manufacturer deal turns a pricing scandal into a category.

As of the June 29, 2021 announcement, ReliOn NovoLog was rolling out to Walmart pharmacies by prescription that week and to Sam's Club in mid-July. The company was still expanding clinics and virtual care, though it had recently lost senior health talent, including Sean Slovenski and chief medical officer Dr. Tom Van Gilder.
