123 Baby Box is a monthly subscription box of baby products curated through a quiz about the child's age, development stage and preferences.

Bootstrapped from launch (March 2021), then $1.2M pre-seed from an investor group, XRC Labs, Sunstone Fund, Salt Lake City Angels, California Crescent Fund and angels.

Zarina Bahadur, then a business student at UC Irvine, started 123 Baby Box in March 2021 after watching a mother juggle two children and a full cart of baby products in Target and wondering why it all couldn't just arrive in a box.

She won first place in a UC Irvine startup competition, turned down an acquisition offer eight months in, packed boxes out of her parents' garage, and grew through 2022: revenue tripled, monthly recurring revenue rose five-fold, headcount reached nine, and a breast-pump distributor signed a deal to send boxes to 1 million of its customers. After that deal she raised $1.2 million in pre-seed funding.

Baby products are a $29 billion US market where choice overload, not scarcity, is the customer's problem.

The quiz-driven curation generates development-stage data no single-brand retailer sees, feeding a manufacturer-insights business.

The breast-pump distributor deal offered 1 million exactly-right customers — the moment bootstrapping became the constraint.

Turning down an early acquisition bet the founder on reaching distribution scale before selling.

A subscription's defensible layer is the data it accumulates — a quiz that improves curation also becomes a product-insights business manufacturers will pay for.

As of March 13, 2023, 123 Baby Box had nine employees, a $1.2 million pre-seed, a 12-month runway it aimed to stretch to 20, and plans to build four revenue streams on the way to a Series A.
