A Bengaluru e-commerce enabler that gave small stores sourcing, supply chain and credit, later pivoting to an enablement platform.

Over $54 million raised to date; Nilekani alone invested $18 million; valued at over $100 million at its last round.

Founded in 2015 by Sharma and Apoorva Jois and backed by Nandan Nilekani and Fung Investment, ShopX offered an assisted e-commerce solution — sourcing, supply chain and credit line — to small retailers, a model similar to Udaan's, and became an early co-creator of India's e-B2B industry.

The model didn't work. In mid-2021 ShopX pivoted to an e-commerce enablement platform and laid off over 50% of its employees in June 2021, both reported exclusively by Entrackr. It also tested the consumer internet space with a cashback app offering discounts below MRP and reward points on UPI payments at local stores. But the company could not raise a new round after April 2020, a period when Indian b2b e-commerce startups collectively raised over a billion dollars, and took multiple rupee loans from Fung Investment that it could no longer service.

By August 2022 ShopX had shut operations and filed an insolvency application under section 10 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, passed by special board resolution. It said the business became unviable at scale given the industry's low margin profile, that it had ceased to be a going concern, and that loan obligations were limited to its main shareholders.

The assisted e-commerce model never reached viable unit economics at scale in a low-margin industry.

The mid-2021 pivot to enablement came too late to change the revenue trajectory before runway ended.

No new round since April 2020, precisely when the sector was flush — signals investors had already priced in the model's weakness.

Insider rupee loans from Fung Investment bridged operations but made the insolvency inevitable once interest could not be paid.

Low-margin B2B commerce kills slowly: when the core model fails, a pivot plus insider loans only defers the insolvency filing unless new outside capital arrives.

As of the August 2022 filing, ShopX was in insolvency proceedings with an 'orderly and ethical windup' promised, its loan and interest obligations limited to main shareholders Nilekani and Fung Investment.
