How it started

Abel Avellan's satellite venture AST & Science merged with New Providence Acquisition Corp. to list as AST SpaceMobile in 2021, backed by equityholders that included Vodafone, Rakuten and American Tower. The plan was a low-Earth-orbit constellation that would use mobile operators' own spectrum to connect everyday phones.

What happened

AT&T and AST signed a definitive commercial agreement in May 2024, and Verizon made a $100 million commitment earlier that year. The FCC granted an initial license to launch and operate the first five BlueBird satellites in August 2024, though satellite-to-cell frequency authorization was still pending at launch, per Satellite Today.

How it ended up

SpaceX launched the five BlueBird satellites from Cape Canaveral on 2024-09-12, with CEO Abel Avellan confirming contact with all five. In February 2025 AT&T completed a satellite video call over its spectrum using those BlueBirds, which AT&T said would be used to start commercial service; Rakuten made Japan's first satellite video call to an ordinary smartphone in April 2025.

Background

AST SpaceMobile's bet is that mobile coverage can come from space without changing the phone in your pocket. Instead of building terminals or requiring special chips, its BlueBird satellites use the licensed spectrum of partner carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and Rakuten to connect ordinary smartphones directly from low Earth orbit.

The company listed in 2021 through a SPAC merger, with Vodafone, Rakuten and American Tower among its early equityholders. A single test satellite, BlueWalker 3, demonstrated two-way voice and video calls to everyday phones during 2023, giving AST a proof point it could take to regulators and carriers.

The commercial step arrived in 2024: AT&T signed a definitive commercial agreement in May, Verizon committed $100 million, and the FCC granted an initial license in August. SpaceX then launched the first five production BlueBird satellites on 2024-09-12; at that point AST still lacked FCC authorization to operate in terrestrial frequencies for satellite-to-cell service.

By February 2025 AT&T had completed a satellite video call over its own spectrum using those BlueBirds and said the same satellites would be used to start commercial service. Rakuten followed with Japan's first satellite video call to an unmodified smartphone in April 2025, targeting a commercial launch of its Saikyo Satellite Service in the fourth quarter of 2026.

What has to be true

  • Partnering with carriers instead of fighting them turned spectrum, the scarce resource, into AST's asset: each operator's license becomes a potential coverage band.
  • Relying on stock-market attention mattered because pre-revenue constellations burn cash; the August 2024 milestones pushed market value above $8 billion before meaningful service revenue.
  • Proof on a test satellite in 2023 made the 2024 regulatory and commercial steps credible, which is how a hardware startup signs carriers before it has a working network.
  • The largest commercial LEO satellites ever deployed, at roughly 700 square feet of array each, were a deliberate scale bet that fewer, bigger spacecraft could cover a country with usable broadband.
  • Sequencing was the strategy: launch the first fleet, demonstrate calls, then scale production and launch cadence while pursuing the remaining FCC authorizations.

Aftermath

As of its FY2025 Form 10-K, filed 2026-03-02, AST SpaceMobile had its five Block 1 BlueBird satellites in orbit since September 2024 and a $550 million non-recourse credit facility dated 2025-07-15 to support the next stage. AT&T has described those BlueBirds as the satellites that will start commercial service, Verizon made a $100 million commitment, and Rakuten plans to launch satellite-to-mobile service in Japan in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company's stated path is a phased commercial launch in targeted markets while it builds out the constellation.
