What the business is
Private Chinese launch company building methane-fueled rockets: the Zhuque-2 reached orbit in 2023 and the reusable, stainless-steel Zhuque-3 targets heavy LEO payloads and mega-constellation launches.
How it started
Founded in 2015 by Zhang Changwu, LandSpace became China's first private rocket company to hold all launch qualifications. Its solid-fuel Zhuque-1 failed in 2018; its Zhuque-2 became the world's first methane-fuelled rocket to reach orbit on its second flight in July 2023.
What happened
On December 3, 2025, the 66-meter Zhuque-3 lifted off from the Dongfeng commercial space zone on its maiden flight. The second stage entered its planned orbit — a first-flight success — while the first stage, making China's first attempt to recover a stage from an orbital launch, suffered anomalous combustion in the landing burn and was lost near the pad. LandSpace said the flight validated engines, staging and guidance and that it would fix and refly. In 2026 it did: on August 18 the next Zhuque-3 put a payload in orbit and its first stage landed upright on legs roughly 390 km downrange — the first successful land-based stage recovery in China — after the company cut the number of engines in the braking burn, added a predicted-landing-point safety function and upgraded reentry thermal protection.
How it ended up
Recovery de-risked but economics unproven: the landed stage must pass inspection before it flies again, and whether reuse actually cuts cost per kilogram for China's constellations is the open question.
Background
LandSpace was founded in 2015 by Zhang Changwu and became China's first private rocket company to hold all launch qualifications. Its Zhuque-1 failed in 2018, but its liquid methane-fueled Zhuque-2 reached orbit in July 2023, the world's first methalox rocket to do so.
The company then pushed the same engine expertise into a much bigger bet: Zhuque-3, a 66-meter stainless-steel rocket designed for reuse, aimed squarely at the mega-constellation launch demand that Chinese operators were starting to build. On December 3, 2025, its maiden flight reached orbit but its first stage exploded during the landing burn — China's first attempt to recover a stage from an orbital launch.
Rather than reading the fireball as a failed strategy, LandSpace treated the flight as data: the upper stage's clean orbital insertion validated the engines and staging, and the recovery attempt exercised reentry guidance. The company cut the number of engines used in the braking burn, added a predicted-landing-point function to the onboard safety control, and upgraded thermal protection for reentry.
On August 18, 2026, the next Zhuque-3 released its payload into orbit and its first stage landed upright on legs about 390 km downrange in the Gobi Desert — China's first successful land-based stage recovery, putting LandSpace in the small club of launchers that have propulsively recovered an orbital stage. Whether the recovered booster can fly again cheaply will decide if the economics of the bet hold.
What has to be true

The stage must pass inspection of engines, tanks and landing gear before reuse; maintenance costs will decide the real gain. Chinese constellation programs are watching: validated reuse lowers cost per kilogram. The December 2025 fireball and August 2026 landing leave economics, not feasibility, as the open question.
