What the business is
Wonder Studio, a cloud web platform that adds motion-captured CG characters to live-action footage using AI image analysis, aimed at professional VFX artists.
The bet
AI that automates mocap, animation and masking for professionals is worth more inside Autodesk's Maya pipeline than as an independent startup.
Starting capital
$2.5M seed in 2021, then an additional $10M later in 2021.
How it started
Founded by VFX artist Nikola Todorovic and actor Tye Sheridan, Wonder Dynamics came out of stealth in 2021 with a $2.5M seed and a pitch to equip indie filmmakers with AI-powered VFX.
What happened
It raised $10M later in 2021 and built Wonder Studio into a fully cloud-hosted web platform. In 2023 it shipped a plug-in so Maya users could streamline work in its character studio; the companies kept talking, 'and one thing led to another', Todorovic said.
How it ended up
Autodesk announced the acquisition on 21 May 2024. Both founders and the full staff joined Autodesk; deal terms were not disclosed and Autodesk's EVP Diana Colella said the immediate focus was continuity, with no account change or brand makeover.
What has to be true
Maya is the long-standing standard in 3D and media production, so a plug-in put Wonder Studio in front of exactly the professionals it wanted.
Autodesk had introduced AI tools in its media products but was not building anything that did what Wonder Studio does, so it filled a gap.
The founders said a startup must pick and choose given limited resources, and that Autodesk would let them accelerate and expand.
What can be applied
A plug-in into the incumbent's dominant tool can double as a courtship: usage inside Maya gave Wonder Dynamics a path to acquisition instead of a fight for artists' attention.
Aftermath
As of 21 May 2024, the acquisition was announced with terms undisclosed. Both founders and the full team joined Autodesk, and the stated plan was continuity: no new accounts and no brand makeover, with any later changes expected to be positive for users.
