What the business is
SmartNews is a Tokyo news-discovery app founded in 2012 that uses machine learning to personalize stories from more than 3,000 publisher partners. It rode a COVID-era US surge to roughly 30 million monthly users, then restructured when ad revenue stalled, rebuilt around monetization, and began preparing a Tokyo IPO.
The bet
Profit before growth: shrink the global team, pivot US ads from reach to yield, unify Japan–US engineering, and list in Tokyo even below the 2021 $2B round.
Starting capital
SmartNews has raised over $400M since 2012; the September 2021 Series F of ¥25.1B ($230M), led with backers including Princeville Capital, set a private valuation above ¥210B ($2B). It remained private through the 2023 crisis, funding the turnaround from operations after consolidated profit returned in FY2023.
How it started
Founded in 2012, SmartNews launched in the US in 2014 and expanded its local-news footprint to thousands of American cities in early 2020, riding the stay-home surge. By September 2021 it was Japan's best-known unicorn: a ¥25.1B Series F valued the private company above ¥210B ($2B), a round the leadership had reportedly postponed since 2019 while pushing for a higher price. The boom looked like proof that a Japanese startup could win a global consumer market.
What happened
The boom broke. Apple's app-tracking limits and advertiser pullback hit ad-funded news apps, and SmartNews's usage fell 10–20% in both its markets. In January 2023 the company announced a 40% cut of its US and China workforce — about 120 of nearly 900 employees — and the cuts deepened, with US headcount falling from more than 145 to roughly 60 and Japan facing voluntary departures; CEO Ken Suzuki told staff the layoffs were a last resort. SmartNews then rebuilt around profitability: it replaced country-siloed teams with cross-functional global groups so Japan and the US stopped duplicating products, strengthened real-time-bidding connections to open ad networks, added first-party and video ad formats, and signed an NTT Docomo tie-up. Consolidated results turned profitable in FY2023, and the US business, after three years of work, recorded its first operating profit in Q3 2025 and kept full-year 2025 profitable.
How it ended up
By mid-2026 the operational turnaround was bankable but the old price tag was not. Bloomberg reported on 2026-03-24 that SmartNews was preparing a Tokyo listing as soon as October 2026 with Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities and Nomura, and that the valuation would likely come in below the ¥210B ($2B) set in 2021 — a down-round IPO relative to the stay-home peak. SmartNews said capital policy was under review and nothing was decided. The profitability-first strategy worked operationally; the public-market verdict, expected around October 2026, is the real test.
What has to be true
The 2023 cuts were a re-wedge, not just cost-cutting: once the stay-home market ended, reach no longer justified its cost, and SmartNews changed what the US business was for — profit instead of share.
The monetization levers sat inside assets SmartNews already owned: 30 million users and 3,000-plus publisher relationships meant the pivot was about ad yield, not rebuilding distribution.
The reorganisation removed real duplication: Japan and the US had been building overlapping features separately, and cross-functional global teams cut the cost of the footprint without abandoning it.
Restoring profit before listing let SmartNews control its own exit narrative — yet the reported IPO price below the 2021 round is the market's verdict on what the boom-time peak was actually worth.
What can be applied
A $2B round prices a growth story, not a floor: SmartNews bought a global war chest at the peak, paid with deep layoffs, rebuilt on monetization, and now faces an IPO below its 2021 sticker.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-06 SmartNews had not filed. Bloomberg (2026-03-24) reported an October 2026 Tokyo target with Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley and Nomura as underwriters and a valuation likely below the ¥210B ($2B) of 2021; the company said only that capital policy was under consideration. Toyo Keizai's June 2026 COO interview confirmed profit since FY2023 and a US business profitable from Q3 2025 through the full year. Open questions: whether generative AI's 'zero-click' consumption erodes SmartNews's ad business, and whether Tokyo investors accept a down-round listing.
