What the business is
b8ta pioneered 'retail as a service' — stores that demo products without selling them; Beta Japan ran the licensed Japanese version of the concept.
The bet
That the 'store that doesn't sell' model b8ta pioneered still works in Japan: own the trademark and software outright, operate independently and expand toward Asia.
Starting capital
Beta Japan paid an undisclosed sum for the exclusive Japan trademark and software licence; under the previous arrangement it had paid a few percent of sales as royalties.
How it started
Kitagawa joined Beta Japan at the end of 2019 to help launch the Japan business, after opening Dyson's first global flagship store, Dyson Demo Omotesando, as its retail manager; b8ta entered Japan in August 2020.
What happened
Kitagawa said that in September 2020 the capital tie with the US was dissolved in favour of a licence model costing a few percent of sales, buying freer rein. Over the following year he negotiated to buy the trademark and software outright; the deal closed and the new company's registration completed on 2022-02-28, after the exclusive Japan licence was announced on 2022-02-24.
How it ended up
With US b8ta's stores all closed as of 2022-02-18, Beta Japan emerged as an independent holder of the b8ta brand and platform in Japan. Kitagawa said it aims to raise capital through a third-party allotment and is considering expansion into Asia.
What has to be true
Severing the capital tie in 2020 had already insulated the Japan business, so the parent's collapse became a buying opportunity rather than a bankruptcy.
Kitagawa said the b8ta brand remains an asset for Asian expansion even though it had failed in the US.
Owning the source code preserved an operating workflow and tablet integrations instead of paying to rebuild, keeping the Japan model alive.
What can be applied
When a licensor collapses, the local operator with operational freedom can become the buyer of last resort — owning the brand and source code outright beats paying royalties to a dying parent.
Aftermath
As of the April 2022 interview, Beta Japan was independent with the exclusive Japan trademark and software licence (announced 2022-02-24), planning a third-party allotment capital raise and weighing expansion into Asia, with the Shibuya store and non-electronics categories continuing under its own judgment.
