What the business is
Bioactivx, a Singapore spin-out from A*STAR and SingHealth, makes Bioactiv Matrix - a fully synthetic, bio-inspired skin substitute designed to speed tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation without animal-derived materials. Unlike conventional treatments based on animal collagen or skin grafts, it needs no cold-chain storage and can be applied outside sterile operating theatres, with a pipeline extending to chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers and inflammatory skin conditions.
The bet
Synthetic, animal-free skin substitutes that need no cold chain or sterile theatre can take wound care into clinics and field settings where grafts never reached.
Starting capital
US$1.43 million seed (November 2025) and US$3 million pre-Series A (August 2026)
How it started
Bioactivx is a spin-out from A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering and the SingHealth healthcare group, built through A*STAR's venture-building programmes. Co-founder Peili Teo, a principal scientist at IMRE, had published peer-reviewed work in 2023 with A*STAR and KK Women's and Children's Hospital collaborators on a 3D-printed synthetic dermal scaffold for burn wounds - research that predates the company. She teamed up with Yew Lok Woo, a consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at Singapore General Hospital, as clinical lead, and Mickey Cheong as chief operating officer, to turn the material science into a commercial product.
What happened
Bioactivx raised a US$1.43 million seed in November 2025 led by Cocoon Capital, then a US$3 million pre-Series A in August 2026 co-led by Cocoon and Martin Krupp's ContInvest to expand Singapore manufacturing, build regulatory and commercial teams and support post-market trials. The company says Bioactiv Matrix showed full wound closure within seven days and no inflammation by day 15 in preclinical work, with early human trials recovering faster than standard care - figures it reports itself rather than from a published clinical trial. It submitted a full data package to Singapore's Health Sciences Authority and aims to launch in Singapore in Q4 2026, with an FDA application planned for 2026 and EU medical-device submission in 2027.
What has to be true
Bioactiv Matrix removes two constraints of existing skin substitutes - animal-derived materials and cold-chain logistics - that keep advanced wound care inside well-equipped hospitals.
The founders combine the material science (an A*STAR principal scientist), the clinical practice (a Singapore General Hospital surgeon) and operations in one team.
Research credibility predates the company: co-founder Peili Teo's 2023 peer-reviewed dermal-scaffold work with A*STAR and KK Hospital anchors the science.
The Singapore regulatory path is a controlled first market before FDA and EU filings, giving the startup a staged route to a global product.
What can be applied
For a regulated medical product, the wedge is not the molecule alone: remove infrastructure constraints like cold chain and sterile operating rooms and the addressable market changes shape.
Aftermath
As of 2026-08-26 Bioactivx has raised US$4.9 million across seed and pre-Series A rounds, with the latest US$3 million funding Singapore manufacturing, regulatory and commercial hiring, and post-market trials. Bioactiv Matrix awaits a Health Sciences Authority decision after a full data-package submission, with a Q4 2026 Singapore launch planned and FDA and EU filings targeted for 2026-27. It faces PolyNovo's FDA-cleared NovoSorb BTM, and its efficacy claims remain company-reported pending published clinical evidence.
