What the business is
Bling is a family money-management app offering a prepaid card, child-friendly phone plans and family tools like shopping lists and calendars.
The bet
Folding Finstep's interactive money lessons into Bling's app extends its financial-literacy mission from small children up to teens and young adults.
Starting capital
More than $15M raised, including a $12M Series A in 2024 from La Famiglia, PEAK, Angel Invest and Commerzbank Group's Neosfer.
How it started
Berlin-based Bling was founded in 2021 by Nils Feigenwinter, a twentysomething German media call a 'fintech wunderkind' after three earlier youth-oriented startups, including a Swiss student magazine and a consultancy for young adults.
What happened
Finstep was founded in Hamburg in 2022 by Christian Binder as a financial-learning app for teenagers and young adults, offering 'interactive missions' on inflation, investing and taxes. It stayed under 10 employees, focused on the B2B market with around 30,000 users, and collaborated with banks.
How it ended up
Bling announced the acquisition on 2025-08-04; terms were not disclosed. Feigenwinter said the Finstep content fits Bling's app and helps make young people in Germany 'financially wise', and Binder said integration continues Finstep's mission 'strengthened by the reach and platform that Bling has built'.
What has to be true
Bling's product serves parents of young children; Finstep's content reaches teens and young adults, so the acquisition stretches the same mission across the family's age range.
Finstep stayed under 10 staff and B2B-focused; joining a better-funded consumer app continued its mission with reach it could not build alone.
Financial literacy is Bling's stated brand mission, so content M&A reinforces the story its investors already backed.
What can be applied
A startup can buy its next audience: tuck in an app that serves the age group your users are about to grow into, instead of building that content yourself.
Aftermath
As of the 2025-08-04 announcement, Bling planned to fold Finstep's interactive missions into its own app; terms were not disclosed and Bling's user figures are self-reported.
