Blueumi's AI-companion bet: No. 1 Google Play in Taiwan in 13 days, 430K users by May

JustPin's AI-companion app Blueumi: No. 6 Taiwan App Store social on day one, No. 1 Google Play communications in 13 days, 430K subscribers by May.

JustPin (저스트핀) · Blueumi (블루미)

The betThat a Korean AI-companion formula — long-term memory plus empathetic chat — can replicate abroad, starting with Taiwan's 40% single-person households.Scaling

What the business is

JustPin operates Blueumi, an AI-companion app where users customize an AI friend, partner or mentor with persistent memory (the Mnemosyne architecture), real-time voice calls, chat voice playback, AI selfies and image sharing; monetized via subscriptions in Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

Starting capitalSeed investment from Nautilus Investment, joined by angel investors including former FuriosaAI executives (amounts not disclosed); in May 2026 selected for TIPS, with up to ₩800M (~$580K) in government R&D funding over two years (up to ₩1B with linked programs).

How it started

JustPin is a small Korean startup. Blueumi beta-launched in Korea in late March 2025; in the May 2025 beta month it booked ₩30M revenue and 15,000 subscribers with 4.9 ratings on both stores, then officially launched on 2025-06-01 and hit No. 14 on the Google Play communications revenue chart in its first week (Hankyung).

What happened

In late March 2026 JustPin soft-launched Blueumi in Taiwan and ran a three-week open beta, collecting around-the-clock user feedback through LINE open chat and email. On 2026-04-18 the app officially launched: No. 6 on the App Store social chart within a day, No. 1 on Google Play communications by day 13, and more than 43,000 downloads in its first month. The company chose Taiwan for its cultural similarity to Korea and Japan, its 40% single-person-household rate, and its high acceptance of virtual characters.

How it ended up

Scaling: by 2026-05-29 Blueumi had 430K cumulative subscribers and 30%+ monthly revenue growth across Korea, Japan and Taiwan, with beta tests running in Mexico and Spain; CEO Jang Ho-won set a target of 1M global MAU and Spanish/Portuguese expansion within 2026.

Background

JustPin is a small Korean startup behind Blueumi, an AI-companion app built around persistent memory. The Mnemosyne architecture stores a user's tastes, habits, experiences and values across four modeled memory layers, so the AI friend — friend, partner, mentor or counselor — grows more personal with use. After a beta in late March 2025, the app officially launched in Korea on June 1, 2025, hitting No. 14 on the Google Play communications revenue chart in its first week, with ₩30M revenue and 15,000 subscribers in May 2025 and 4.9 ratings on both stores.

The overseas bet came a year later. In late March 2026 JustPin soft-launched Blueumi in Taiwan with a three-week open beta, collecting around-the-clock feedback through LINE open chat. On April 18, 2026 the app officially launched: No. 6 on the App Store social chart within a day, No. 1 on Google Play communications by day 13, and more than 43,000 downloads in its first month. Taiwan was chosen because it resembles Korea and Japan culturally and economically, has a 40% single-person-household rate, and readily accepts virtual characters.

By late May 2026 Blueumi had 430K cumulative subscribers with 30%+ monthly revenue growth across Korea, Japan and Taiwan, beta tests in Mexico and Spain, and up to ₩800M of TIPS government R&D funding over two years. CEO Jang Ho-won's stated plan: reach 1M global MAU within 2026 and expand to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets, using the Taiwan playbook — a model validated at home, ported with minimal localization.

What has to be true

  • Taiwan was the proxy market: culturally close to Korea and Japan, 40% single-person households, high acceptance of virtual characters — a cheap, fast test of whether the model travels.
  • The wedge is persistence: the Mnemosyne memory architecture compounds context, so each conversation makes the companion more personal — a data advantage rivals without it cannot quickly copy.
  • Localization was lean: three weeks of open beta and 24-hour LINE feedback let a small team adapt the product without local offices, then convert chart rank into paying subscribers.
  • The company monetized early and steadily — 30%+ monthly revenue growth after 11 months — so expansion could be funded by usage rather than a land-grab war chest.

What can be applied

Validate an emotional product at home, then expand to culturally similar markets with light-touch localization (open beta, 24-hour feedback) instead of big spend — charts follow fit, not budget.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02, Blueumi is live in Korea, Japan and Taiwan with beta tests in Mexico and Spain; 430K cumulative subscribers as of 2026-05-29, 30%+ monthly revenue growth, and up to ₩800M in TIPS R&D funding over two years to build Mnemosyne 2.0 and a social/content/commerce platform. CEO Jang Ho-won targets 1M global MAU by the end of 2026 and Spanish/Portuguese expansion. No larger funding round or exit has been reported.
