BUSSID bets Indonesian streets beat global sims; indie bus sim tops Indonesia charts

Bus Simulator Indonesia (BUSSID), a free-to-play Android/iOS bus-driving simulator set in Indonesian cities with real local bus liveries, traffic, roadside stalls and Independence Day events.

That Indonesians want a bus sim on their own streets with real local brands — and a tiny Surabaya studio can outlast global studios by staying hyper-local and free.

Maleo Media Kreatif began building Bus Simulator Indonesia around 2016 and the game's Play Store milestones show it gaining traction fast: 100K installs by April 2017, 1M by May 2017, 5M by December 2017. The pitch was simple — drive Indonesian buses through Indonesian streets instead of generic western roads — with free-to-play monetization through ads and in-app purchases.

BUSSID grew through its community: players recorded and streamed their runs on YouTube, and the studio shipped vehicle-modification features and regular updates, including a special Indonesian Independence Day edition in August 2024. It passed 10M installs by mid-2018, 50M by October 2020 and 100M by December 2022 (AndroidRank milestone data). In 2021 Microsoft gave it the Azure Playfab award for the most growth in monthly active users, and in late 2025 the studio released a new iOS version, Bus Simulator Indonesia: Maleo.

Still running and expanding: as of late August 2026 BUSSID is the #1 Simulation app by usage on Google Play in Indonesia (Similarweb), and Maleo ships follow-on titles such as Truck Simulator Indonesia, which also sits in the same top-20 chart.

Hyper-local content — real Indonesian bus brands, roads, stalls and national celebrations — was something global studios could not match.

Free-to-play on Android captured a price-sensitive market that paid PC and console bus sims ignored.

The modding and streaming community kept monthly active users compounding year after year, earning Microsoft's 2021 growth award.

Buses are the daily commute for millions of Indonesians, a relatable everyday subject no major studio had simmed.

A tiny local studio won by being hyper-local — real bus brands, streets and events — where global studios ship generic cars; authenticity plus a modding community compounds into 100M+ downloads.

As of September 2026 BUSSID remains live and growing: Similarweb's August 30, 2026 snapshot ranks it #1 by usage among Simulation games on Google Play in Indonesia, with 100M+ installs and an estimated 140M. Maleo Media Kreatif continues to ship updates and follow-on simulators such as Truck Simulator Indonesia from its Surabaya base.
