A free-to-play mobile take on Monopoly: roll dice, build landmarks, and raid friends' banks, monetized through in-app purchases and ads.

That a beloved board-game license rebuilt as a social loop and funded with record UA spend could out-grow all original IP in mobile, repaying marketing at $200M a month.

Scopely, the Los Angeles mobile publisher founded in 2011 by Walter Driver, had bought scale — Disney's FoxNext in 2020, Sony's GSN Games for $1B in 2021 — and licensed Hasbro's Monopoly to build a mass-casual answer to Coin Master. It launched April 11, 2023.

Six days before launch, Saudi PIF's Savvy Games Group agreed to buy Scopely for $4.9B. Monopoly Go then made $1B in seven months — the fastest casual-game climb on record — behind marketing spend that crossed $1B, passed $2B in ten months by March 2024, and closed 2024 with $2.5B in consumer spend, the year's best for any mobile game.

Still running as Scopely's engine: $5B in gross bookings within 24 months by April 2025, faster than any game in mobile history against a prior benchmark of 40 months, with 20M players in its community channels — and a cash flow strong enough to fund Scopely's $3.5B purchase of Niantic's games business.

The license did real work: Monopoly's name bought trust and instant creative recognition, cutting through ad clutter that buries original mobile IP and lowering the cost of every install.

The loop was engineered for sharing — heists and raids against friends made the game self-marketing, so the giant UA budget amplified word of mouth instead of replacing it.

Scopely treated UA as a compounding asset rather than a cost, and its LTV machinery kept the spend profitable; smaller studios copying the formula without it burned out.

Selling six days before launch meant the founders banked $4.9B for a portfolio that had not yet produced its biggest hit — pricing certainty over upside, a rare trade to see resolved so publicly.

A trusted license bolted onto a proven social loop and funded with record UA spend can still set records in a 'saturated' market — but sellers who priced early never saw the upside.

As of May 2025, Monopoly Go remains the industry's revenue benchmark: $5B gross bookings in 24 months, a live roadmap of tournaments, new boards and sticker seasons under president of gaming Massimo Maietti, and roughly 20M players in its community channels. Scopely operates autonomously under Savvy and has agreed to acquire Niantic's games business for $3.5B, folding Pokémon Go into the same portfolio.
