What the business is
Epsagon built application monitoring designed from the ground up for modern containerized workloads — tracing and metrics for ephemeral microservices; Cisco sells networking and software broadly.
The bet
That customers want one observability platform with shared context across teams — not a pile of monitoring tools stitched together after acquisition
Starting capital
Reported $500M acquisition price (Cisco would not confirm to TechCrunch); Epsagon had raised $30M and was reportedly near a Series B at a ~$200M valuation
How it started
Epsagon launched in 2018 in Israel building monitoring for serverless and microservices applications — workloads whose ephemeral nature makes tracing and metrics genuinely hard with legacy tools.
What happened
Cisco had been assembling an applications-monitoring stack: AppDynamics for $3.7 billion in 2018, ThousandEyes for $1 billion in 2020. Epsagon added the modern cloud-native piece. Israeli outlet Calcalist reported the startup was on the verge of a big Series B at a valuation around $200 million when it accepted Cisco's offer — roughly doubling that value.
How it ended up
Announced August 2021, expected to close later that year; Epsagon becomes the microservices component of Cisco's 'full-stack observability' concept, with early investors seeing a strong return.
What has to be true
It shows the consolidation logic of observability: monitoring belongs to whoever owns the network, and Cisco was buying its way to the full stack.
Epsagon's exit timing is the lesson in negotiation — a hot round in hand is leverage, and selling at roughly twice the contemplated valuation beat raising it.
The integration risk Cisco took on (stitching AppDynamics, ThousandEyes and Epsagon into one product) is the recurring test of platform-by-acquisition strategies.
What can be applied
Being the missing piece of an acquirer's roadmap beats the next round: Epsagon traded a ~$200M valuation for roughly double, in a stack the buyer had spent $4.7B assembling.
Aftermath
The deal was expected to close later in 2021. Cisco positioned Epsagon inside its full-stack observability portfolio alongside AppDynamics and ThousandEyes; no post-close product figures were disclosed at announcement.
