What the business is
Software platform that manages and accelerates construction permitting for businesses opening physical locations
The bet
One platform serving both developers and city agencies can own permitting start to finish and predict opening dates, unlike single-side tools or local expediters
Starting capital
$8M seed led by Trust Ventures with LiveOak Ventures and Chicago Ventures
How it started
GreenLite was founded in July 2022 in Austin by James Gallagher, a former Gopuff executive, who had watched permits gate construction. His pitch: other companies serve only the developer or the city agency, or act as local expediters, which he considered unscalable.
What happened
On 2023-10-31 GreenLite emerged from stealth with the $8M seed and a 27-person team. It claimed its platform accelerated city planning approval by 75%, getting permits in weeks instead of months or years, and said it drove Chick-fil-A's permitting from six to twelve months down to weeks. It worked with hundreds of businesses and planned to spend the money on sales, customer success, product and engineering.
What has to be true
Permitting delays directly cost multi-location businesses revenue, so demand for a faster process is high and expensive to ignore
Serving both developers and city agencies on one platform is a different position from project-management tools or local expediters
Marquee customers like Chick-fil-A, Domino's and Chipotle validate the wedge before the seed is even announced
What can be applied
When a bottleneck sits between two parties that don't talk, owning the whole pipeline beats optimizing either side alone.
Aftermath
As of 2023-10-31 GreenLite had just left stealth with 27 employees, hundreds of business customers and the $8M seed to deploy: growing sales and customer success, expanding product and engineering, and pushing into New Jersey, Virginia, Tennessee and California.
