What the business is
Marketplace connecting creators with businesses that need marketing and content, acquired by social network Plaiced
The bet
Selling to a partner with an existing creator network will take Clutch's marketplace further than staying independent
Starting capital
About $2 million raised, including a $1.2M pre-seed led by Precursor Ventures in August 2022
How it started
Madison Long and Simone May founded Clutch in 2020 to connect people to businesses looking for marketing and content creation. At the August 2022 pre-seed it had over 200 creators and a 3,000-person waitlist.
What happened
Clutch restructured and laid off staff in June 2023 to prioritise profitability, which it reached in 2024. Co-founder May stepped down as CTO, leaving Long as CEO. Long was introduced to Plaiced CEO Kaaveh Shoamanesh at a networking event in early May 2024, and acquisition talks followed; she said the deciding factor was finding a partner who could take the company further and that Plaiced shared its values on paying creators fairly.
How it ended up
The deal closed in the week of 2024-07-26 for undisclosed terms. Clutch's team was four people, some staying; Long stays as an advisor for at least 18 months.
What has to be true
Content creation was changing quickly with generative AI, raising the stakes for scale
Long concluded that an acquisition was the strongest next step to remain competitive in the creator economy
Plaiced shared Clutch's stance on paying creators what they deserve
Clutch had already restructured and reached profitability, which made it more attractive to a buyer
What can be applied
Founders of a small marketplace that reached profitability sold rather than scaled alone, citing a changing industry and the need for a partner; no price was disclosed.
Aftermath
As of 2024-07-26, Clutch was acquired by Plaiced for undisclosed terms, its four-person team partly staying on, with Long advising for at least 18 months.
