Credo AI bets on EU AI Act compliance; $41M raised as rules go live
Credo AI spent 2020–2024 building AI governance tooling before it was mandatory; the EU AI Act's 2025 deadlines turned its niche into a market.
Credo AI
What the business is
Sells a SaaS platform that inventories an enterprise's AI systems, scores their risk, and maps them to regulations such as the EU AI Act, NIST and ISO 42001.
How it started
Founded in 2020 by Navrina Singh, Credo AI started with third-party AI assessments and early work on fairness and bias cards, betting that enterprises would need evidence their AI was safe. For years the market was soft. Then the EU AI Act entered into force on August 1, 2024, with prohibitions and AI-literacy duties applying from February 2025 and general-purpose AI model obligations from August 2025.
What happened
The regulatory clock turned the niche into a market. In July 2024 Credo AI raised $21M — $41.3M total — from CrimsoNox Capital, Mozilla Ventures and FPV Ventures, and said revenue had tripled in a year with headcount tripling. It shipped EU AI Act policy packs and ISO/IEC 42001 support, partnered with Databricks and McKinsey, and counted Mastercard, Northrop Grumman and Booz Allen Hamilton among customers.
How it ended up
Still running and scaling: named a Gartner Cool Vendor in AI Cybersecurity Governance (October 2025) and a Leader in Forrester's Q3 2025 AI Governance Wave, with the EU AI Act as its growth engine.
Background
Credo AI was founded in 2020 by Navrina Singh on a simple bet: enterprises would eventually need to prove their AI was safe, not just claim it. Its early product produced third-party assessments and fairness and bias service cards — for years a niche whose roadmap was being written by regulators rather than customers.
The roadmap arrived with the EU AI Act, which entered into force on August 1, 2024: prohibited practices and AI-literacy duties applied from February 2025, and obligations for general-purpose AI models from August 2025. Credo AI had spent four years building exactly the tooling those deadlines required — and raised $21M in July 2024, bringing total funding to $41.3M, with revenue tripling in a year.
By late 2025 the bet had been validated: Gartner named Credo AI a Cool Vendor in AI cybersecurity governance and Forrester placed it as a Leader in its AI Governance Wave. The catch is timing — the EU's 2026 'AI Omnibus' pushed high-risk AI obligations to 2027–2028, so the largest mandated spend arrives later than the 2024 headlines suggested.
What has to be true
- Credo AI bet that regulation would be a demand generator: build governance tooling before it is mandatory, then ride each new law into enterprise budgets.
- The EU AI Act's 2025 dates were the trigger: prohibitions in February and GPAI obligations in August 2025 gave compliance teams a deadline and a budget.
- Being early paid off in credibility: customers like Mastercard and Northrop Grumman, plus Databricks and McKinsey partnerships, let Credo claim the category before rivals scaled.
- Timing still matters: the AI Omnibus pushed high-risk obligations to 2027–2028, so the biggest mandated market is later than 2024 headlines suggested.
What can be applied
Regulation creates markets on a schedule: Credo AI built AI governance before it was mandatory, and the EU AI Act's 2025 deadlines were the demand event that turned a niche into a business.
Aftermath
As of Aug 2026, Credo AI is still independent and scaling. It was named a Gartner Cool Vendor in AI Cybersecurity Governance in October 2025 and a Leader in The Forrester Wave: AI Governance Solutions (Q3 2025), and continues to expand its platform to cover agents and generative AI. The EU AI Act's GPAI obligations and prohibitions are already in force, while high-risk obligations apply from December 2027 and August 2028 after the 2026 AI Omnibus changes — so the compliance market is real, but it arrives on a slower schedule than the 2024 hype suggested.
