H raised a record $220M seed for AI agents, then lost three cofounders

Paris startup H raised a record $220M seed for 'frontier action models' before shipping; three of five cofounders quit, yet Runner H launched months later.

H Company

The betThat compact 'frontier action models' — small AI agents that perform tasks instead of chatting — would beat giant LLMs and make Europe an AI-agent leader.Live

What the business is

AI company building compact language and vision models that power agents to automate web tasks: testing, quality assurance and business processes.

Starting capital$220M seed (May 2024), roughly 40% equity and the rest convertible debt; investors included Accel, Amazon, Samsung, UiPath, Eric Schmidt, Xavier Niel, Yuri Milner and Aglaé (Arnault).

How it started

Founded in Paris by Charles Kantor, a Stanford computational-mathematics researcher, and four ex-DeepMind scientists (Laurent Sifre, Karl Tuyls, Daan Wierstra, Julien Perolat), H announced a $220M seed in May 2024 — then Europe's largest AI seed — with 25 staff and no product, aiming for 'frontier action models to boost the productivity of workers'.

What happened

Before shipping anything, three of the five cofounders left in Aug 2024 citing 'operational differences', leaving Kantor and Sifre. In Nov 2024 H shipped Runner H, an 'agentic' web-automation product built on a 2-billion-parameter model the company said beat Anthropic's Computer Use by 29% on WebVoyager, and TechCrunch confirmed a Series A was being raised. In June 2025 H publicly launched Runner H, Tester H and Surfer H, open-sourced its Holo-1 vision model, and replaced Kantor as CEO with former Palantir France boss Gautier Cloix, who set out to sell into large enterprises with forward-deployed engineers.

No ending yet — it is still running.

Background

H was founded in Paris by Charles Kantor, a Stanford computational-mathematics researcher, and four Google DeepMind veterans — Laurent Sifre, Karl Tuyls, Daan Wierstra and Julien Perolat — to build 'frontier action models': AI agents that perform tasks rather than chat. In May 2024, months after inception and before releasing any product, it announced a $220M seed round, then Europe's largest AI seed, with investors including Accel, Amazon, Samsung, UiPath, Eric Schmidt, Xavier Niel and Bernard Arnault's Aglaé.

The money bought time but not stability. Three months later, three of the five cofounders — Tuyls, Wierstra and Perolat — left over 'operational differences', still pre-product, leaving Kantor and Sifre to lead. In Nov 2024 the company shipped Runner H, an 'agentic' web-automation system built on a compact 2-billion-parameter model that H said outperformed Anthropic's Computer Use by 29% on the WebVoyager benchmark; TechCrunch confirmed a Series A was in the works.

In June 2025 H publicly launched Runner H, Tester H and Surfer H, open-sourced its Holo-1 vision model, and replaced CEO Kantor with Gautier Cloix, ex-head of Palantir France, who aimed to sell into large enterprises with forward-deployed engineers and pilots in hospitality and finance. As of Aug 2026 H remains private with no later round publicly confirmed, betting that small specialist agents can undercut the giant-model players.

What has to be true

  • Raising a record seed before shipping any product is possible only when investors buy the team and thesis; H's $220M round was a bet on pedigree.
  • The same conviction that assembled the team tore it apart: three cofounders left within three months over operational differences.
  • H bet against the trend with compact 2B-parameter models, arguing small specialist agents beat large generalist chatbots on cost and reliability.
  • After the exodus, the company pivoted its story from research prestige to enterprise sales, hiring a Palantir-style CEO to push deployment.

What can be applied

Raising a record seed on pedigree alone is fragile: strong opinions attract capital but can split a founding team before anything ships; survival depends on shipping fast and adding sales muscle.

Aftermath

As of Aug 2026, H is still private and operating in Paris. It publicly launched its three-agent platform in June 2025, open-sourced its Holo-1 vision model, and since June 2025 has been led by CEO Gautier Cloix, who is pushing enterprise deployments with Palantir-style forward-deployed engineers and pilots in hospitality and finance. No funding round beyond the $220M seed has been publicly confirmed, and Laurent Sifre is the last original cofounder still operational; the company's bet is that small, specialized agent models can win on cost and reliability against giant generalist models.
