What the business is
Deel is an HR and payroll company, founded in Paris and based in San Francisco, built around distributed workforces; Zavvy is a Munich startup for AI-based career progression, training and performance management.
The bet
Folding a small AI people-development startup into Deel's platform makes Deel a one-stop HR shop for distributed and non-distributed workforces alike.
Starting capital
Terms undisclosed; sources said at a premium to Zavvy's PitchBook valuation of just under $16 million, after its $4 million raise in 2022
How it started
Deel, hatched at Y Combinator five years earlier, had made its name on payroll and hiring or contract management for distributed workforces. TechCrunch described the HR market as consolidating, with larger players buying smaller startups to give customers one-stop shops and better unit economics.
What happened
Zavvy had raised $4 million in 2022 from investors including La Famiglia and, its founders said, was growing quickly with SMB and mid-market customers and heading toward a Series A. Zavvy was not looking for a buyer: Deel first approached with a partnership proposal and then made an offer to buy it outright. Zavvy's founders said joining a bigger business suited how services are now procured.
How it ended up
Deel will bring Zavvy's services onto its platform, start building more AI across the wider portfolio, and make its Deel HR tool, previously free for organizations of up to 200 users, free for existing customers of any size. Bouaziz said Deel was profitable since September 2022, had over $600 million in the bank and expected an IPO in the 2025-26 time frame.
What has to be true
TechCrunch says the HR market is consolidating as larger players buy smaller startups, giving customers one-stop shops and better unit economics.
Deel was moving from only distributed workforces to serving both distributed and non-distributed workforces.
Zavvy's founders said joining a bigger business suited the wider shift in how companies buy IT services.
Deel had over $600 million in the bank and profit since September 2022, so it could pay a premium without raising.
What can be applied
A growing platform can turn a partnership talk into a purchase when customers want fewer vendors; small startups with traction may accept because buyers' distribution beats a Series A.
Aftermath
As of 2024-02-28 Zavvy's services were to be integrated onto Deel's platform. Deel's CEO said IPO plans were a way off, likely 2025-26, and that further fundraising was unlikely soon. Integration results and the purchase price were not reported.
