Dreame's premium-robot bet: CEO content spikes searches as IDC crowns it #1
Dreame rose from Xiaomi maker to IDC's world #1 robot-vacuum brand; in 2026 a CEO-led content push spiked its Baidu index roughly 10x.
Dreame Technology (追觅科技)
What the business is
Dreame Technology designs premium robot vacuums, cordless vacuums, floor washers and smart-home appliances around its own high-speed digital motors, selling in 120+ countries from its Suzhou base.
Starting capital:About ¥100K of self-funding from Yu Hao and classmates for 2015–2017 motor R&D (The Paper); then a ¥3.6B (~$560M) Series C in Oct 2021 led by China Renaissance New Economy Fund and CPE Yuanfeng, with Yunfeng Capital, IDG Capital and Country Garden Ventures.
How it started
Yu Hao, admitted to Tsinghua's aerospace school via a physics-olympiad win and a veteran of C919 aerodynamic work, founded Dreame in Suzhou in 2017 after two years of motor development with classmates. He saw the motor as a reusable 'perceive-decide-act' base rather than a single vacuum part, and Dreame formally joined Xiaomi's ecosystem at the end of 2017 for distribution and brand cover.
What happened
After a ¥3.6B Series C in Oct 2021 Dreame de-Xiaomi-ed and pushed premium pricing overseas, where customers pay for measurable tech. IDC shows it at #3 globally in 2025 (3.4M shipments, 10.5% share, +101.9%) and #1 in 30 countries, then world #1 in Q1 2026 in units (1.555M, 23.7%) and revenue ($924M, 28.0%), helped by robotic-arm models; ~70% of revenue came from abroad. In 2026 Yu Hao turned the company into a content engine — staff accounts and hundreds of his own posts lifted his Baidu index from under 500 toward 5,000 at a claimed million-yuan bonus cost versus rivals' ~¥4.9B–5.9B of 2025 selling expenses. The gambit drew backlash: a 'loser' remark about critics, an apology, and a June 5–Sept 2 Weibo suspension citing a state anti-hype campaign, after which Yu Hao handed his accounts to the company.
How it ended up
As of 2026-09-02 Dreame is private and scaling: IDC's Q1-2026 global #1, Euromonitor's 2025 #1 premium robot-vacuum brand, 2025 revenue above ¥40B, and an August 2026 Korea expansion built on an 11M+ unit installed base. The founder's attention experiment was re-caged — his Weibo suspension lifted Sept 2 with accounts under corporate control — as Dreame says it now concentrates on smart home, outdoor/garden, mobility and embodied intelligence.
Background
Dreame Technology began in 2017 when Yu Hao, a Tsinghua aerospace engineer who had worked on C919 aerodynamics, founded the company in Suzhou after two years of developing a 100,000-rpm digital motor at about half Dyson's cost. His bet was that the motor was a reusable technology base, not just a vacuum part, and that Chinese hardware could win overseas at premium prices. Dreame joined Xiaomi's ecosystem at the end of 2017 for distribution, then spent the 2020s escaping that label.
The exit came after an Oct 2021 Series C of ¥3.6B (~$560M). Dreame built its own brand, prioritized markets where customers pay for technology, and grew to #3 globally in 2025 with 3.4M shipments (10.5% share, +101.9% YoY) and #1 status in 30 countries. In Q1 2026 IDC ranked it world #1 in robot vacuums in both units (1.555M, 23.7%) and revenue ($924M, 28.0%), passing Roborock and Ecovacs; robotic-arm models drove the jump and roughly 70% of revenue came from overseas. Euromonitor separately certified Dreame as the 2025 world #1 premium robot-vacuum brand.
The 2026 twist was attention economics. Yu Hao turned staff and himself into a content machine — hundreds of posts, dozens of accounts — and Baidu shows his search index jumping from under 500 to peaks near 5,000, with Dreame's company index overtaking Roborock's and Ecovacs' in H1 2026, at a claimed million-yuan cost against rivals' ~¥4.9B–5.9B of 2025 selling expenses. The same engine produced backlash: 'loser' comments about critics, a public apology, and a Weibo suspension from June 5 to Sept 2, 2026 under a state anti-hype campaign.
As of Sept 2, 2026, Dreame remains private, still growing (2025 revenue above ¥40B, ~70% from overseas) and expanding — an August 2026 Seoul event announced premium small appliances, a Korean data center and a localized service network. After the suspension, Yu Hao said his social accounts now sit under corporate control and Dreame reports it is concentrating on smart home, outdoor/garden, mobility and embodied intelligence. The product bet looks validated; the founder-as-media bet had to be reined in.
What has to be true
- Starting from the motor gave Dreame a component-level edge it could price premium against Dyson while undercutting on cost, instead of buying parts like a contract maker.
- Going overseas-first (about 70% of revenue) avoided China's price war and let technology claims carry premium price points in Europe and the US.
- CEO-plus-staff content replaced most paid ads: Baidu interest in the founder went from under 500 to about 5,000 for a million-yuan bonus budget, against rivals' multi-billion-yuan selling costs.
- The same attention engine created regulatory and brand risk; after a suspension, Dreame had to move the founder's voice under corporate control.
What can be applied
Own a hard component, price premium and go global early — that made Dreame #1. Cheap CEO-led attention worked, but only until the messenger became the story; discipline then had to be re-imposed.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Dreame is private, scaling: IDC's Q1-2026 world #1 in robot vacuums (1.555M units, $924M), Euromonitor's 2025 #1 premium brand, ¥40B+ 2025 revenue (70% overseas), 11M+ cumulative shipments. New hardware keeps shipping — the steam-roller Aqua 20 Ultra in Korea, 60 service centers, 310 Lotte Mart points — and ~7% of revenue goes to R&D. Founder accounts moved to corporate control in June 2026; his Weibo ban ended Sept 2. Focus areas: smart home, outdoor/garden, smart mobility, embodied intelligence; a HK listing and 200+ spin-offs remain founder ambitions, not filings.
