How it started
Electric Hydrogen was founded in 2020 in Natick, Massachusetts, by clean-energy engineers including CEO Raffi Garabedian, former CTO of First Solar. The wager was that green hydrogen's cost problem is a scale problem: hydrogen from natural gas and coal accounts for roughly 2.5% of global emissions, and replacing it requires electrolyzers that can produce tens of tonnes a day at a price competitive with fossil hydrogen.
What happened
EH2 raised over $600M, including a $380M oversubscribed Series C in October 2023 led by Fortescue, Fifth Wall and Energy Impact Partners, with bp Ventures, Temasek, Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund and United Airlines' Sustainable Flight Fund among the investors. It built a 1.2 GW factory in Devens, Massachusetts, booked more than 5 GW of electrolyzer orders, and planned its first customer-sited plant in Texas for New Fortress Energy. In March 2025, with process-equipment maker Titan in Columbus, Texas, EH2 completed fabrication and assembly of its first commercial 100 MW plant, pre-assembled and pre-tested before shipment.
