What the business is
Cedar Park, Texas rocket maker (Alpha small-lift launch vehicle) that grew into an end-to-end space company: launch, Blue Ghost lunar landers, and Elytra on-orbit vehicles for NASA, defense, and commercial customers.
How it started
Founded in 2014 and backed by Noosphere Ventures, Firefly won NASA's $93.3M CLPS award in February 2021 to land ten payloads at Mare Crisium. Months later Alpha's first test flight ended in an anomaly just over two minutes after liftoff. In 2022 AE Industrial Partners acquired Noosphere's stake and led a $75M Series B, and the rebuilt company set to work on Blue Ghost.
What happened
Firefly raised about $300M through 2023 (Series C, $1.5B pre-money) and $175M in Series D (November 2024, valuation above $2B), reached orbit for the first time with Alpha's Noise of Summer mission for NASA in July 2024, and set a 24-hour responsive-launch record for the U.S. Space Force. Blue Ghost 1 launched on a Falcon 9 on January 15, 2025 and soft-landed in Mare Crisium on March 2, 2025 — within 100 meters of its target, on the company's first attempt.
How it ended up
Blue Ghost completed more than 14 days of surface operations (346 hours of daylight) with all 10 NASA payloads returning data and 119 GB downlinked — the longest commercial operations on the Moon to date. Firefly then moved to annual lunar missions: Blue Ghost 2 (with Elytra Dark, lunar orbit and far side) and Blue Ghost 3 are in work, alongside full-rate Alpha production.
Background
Firefly Aerospace, founded in 2014 and headquartered in Cedar Park, Texas, started as a small-launch rocket maker with a proposition of fast, cheap access to orbit. Its bigger bet was that NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program would turn lunar delivery into a repeatable commercial business. In February 2021 NASA awarded Firefly $93.3M to land ten payloads at Mare Crisium under CLPS task order 19D, and Firefly answered by designing and building the Blue Ghost lander in-house.
The road to the pad was rocky. Alpha exploded in an anomaly just over two minutes into its first test flight in September 2021. A year later private-equity firm AE Industrial Partners acquired the Noosphere stake and led a $75M Series B. Firefly then raised roughly $300M through 2023 at a $1.5B pre-money valuation, reached orbit on its first successful Alpha mission (Noise of Summer, July 2024, for NASA), and closed a $175M Series D at a valuation above $2B before its lunar launch.
Blue Ghost 1 launched January 15, 2025 and soft-landed in Mare Crisium on March 2, 2025 — within 100 meters of its target, on the company's first attempt — making Firefly the first commercial company in history to achieve a fully successful Moon landing. Over the next 14 days all 10 NASA payloads operated on the surface, including the first tracking of GPS signals on the Moon and the deepest robotic planetary drill, and the mission downlinked 119 GB of data before operating five hours into lunar night.
Firefly reported 100% of its mission objectives met — the longest commercial operations on the Moon to date — and pivoted to annual lunar missions, with Blue Ghost Mission 2 (lunar orbit and far side, using an Elytra Dark vehicle) and Mission 3 already in work alongside full-rate Alpha production and Elytra on-orbit services. The CLPS bet had become a product line.
What has to be true
- CLPS paid for outcomes rather than cost-plus development, so Firefly's win hinged on execution: land on the first attempt or eat the failure — a bet that made mission discipline the core product.
- The $93.3M task order came while Firefly had no successful rocket launch, so the award itself was a bet on the company's turnaround under AE Industrial Partners.
- Diversifying from rockets into lunar landers let Firefly sell the same customers three services — launch, lunar, on-orbit — and turn one contract into a recurring product line.
- Firefly's 24-hour responsive launch for the U.S. Space Force showed the same execution muscle that later landed Blue Ghost, proving the company's speed claims were operational, not marketing.

Aftermath
As of March 17, 2025, Firefly had completed Blue Ghost Mission 1 with 100% of objectives met, announced annual lunar missions, and begun qualifying and assembling flight hardware for Blue Ghost Mission 2, which will operate in lunar orbit and on the far side of the Moon using an Elytra Dark orbital vehicle. The company was also moving Alpha to full-rate production for contracted missions with NASA, NOAA, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris and True Anomaly, co-developing a Medium Launch Vehicle with Northrop Grumman, and preparing its first Elytra on-orbit mission.
