What the business is

Starfish Space, founded in 2019 and based in Tukwila, Washington, builds Otter, an autonomous satellite-servicing vehicle that docks with client satellites to extend their lives in geostationary orbit or push them to disposal in low Earth orbit.

How it started

Trevor Bennett and Austin Link founded Starfish in 2019, after stints at Blue Origin, on the observation that satellites are built to be disposable: with no affordable servicing, every satellite must be fully self-sufficient. Their answer was Otter, a tug small enough to be affordable — if docking could be made to work on satellites never prepared for it.

What happened

Otter Pup 1 launched in 2023 and rendezvoused with D-Orbit's ION spacecraft in April 2024. Starfish announced Otter Pup 2 in May 2025 to attempt the first docking with an unprepared commercial satellite in low Earth orbit, with D-Orbit's ION as the original target; the D-Orbit docking was later cancelled for undisclosed reasons. After months in orbit, Starfish signed up Australia's Gilmour Space and its ElaraSat satellite as the new partner in May 2026 and began closing the gap for a docking attempt.

How it ended up

The technical prize is still open: as of late May 2026 Otter Pup 2 was maneuvering toward ElaraSat with a docking attempt planned in the coming months, and no first commercial low-Earth-orbit docking had been reported. The commercial side has closed: Otter missions are under contract with Intelsat, NASA, the U.S. Space Force, SDA and SES, and Starfish said its first full Otter missions would fly later in 2026.

Background

Starfish Space, founded in 2019 by ex-Blue Origin engineers Trevor Bennett and Austin Link and based in Tukwila, Washington, builds Otter, an autonomous satellite-servicing vehicle. Its bet: solve docking with software, so Otter can attach to unprepared satellites and be an order of magnitude smaller and cheaper than prior servicing spacecraft, turning life extension and disposal into a commercial service rather than a government specialty.

The path to proof runs through two demonstrators. Otter Pup 1 launched in 2023 and rendezvoused with D-Orbit's ION in April 2024. Otter Pup 2, announced May 2025 and launched later that year, aims at the first docking with an unprepared commercial satellite in low Earth orbit; when its original D-Orbit target fell through, Starfish signed Gilmour Space's ElaraSat as a new partner in May 2026 and began closing range.

Meanwhile the business side closed early: Intelsat contracted the first commercial Otter mission in 2024, NASA, the Space Force and SDA followed with inspection, maneuvering and disposal contracts, and in April 2026 Starfish raised over $100M, passing $150M total venture funding. As of late May 2026, the docking itself remained the open technical question.

What has to be true

  • Satellites are single-use by design: with no affordable servicing, operators accept that a satellite dies when its fuel runs out (Starfish Space press release, 2025-05-20).
  • Earlier servicing vehicles were large and needed docking hardware built into clients; Otter targets unprepared satellites with vision software and an electrostatic grab (Behind the Black).
  • Intelsat signed the first commercial Otter mission in 2024: dock first with a retired GEO satellite in graveyard orbit, then with an operational one for life extension (SatellitePro ME).
  • Capital and contracts arrived before the docking demo finished: over $150M raised and missions booked with NASA, Space Force, SDA and SES by April 2026 (Starfish Space press release).

What can be applied

Starfish sold life-extension and disposal missions to defense and commercial customers before its first docking was proven — the bet now rests on a single in-orbit demonstration.

Aftermath

After the April 2026 Series B, Starfish's plan is to execute its contracted Otter missions: the first full Otter launches in 2026, beginning with the Intelsat campaign in graveyard orbit, plus missions for the Space Force, SDA and NASA. The December 2025 Remora mission with Impulse Space had already validated Starfish's rendezvous software on another tug, closing to about 4,100 feet of a second Impulse vehicle. What remains unproven is the docking itself, still uncompleted as of late May 2026.
