How it started

Peter Beck founded Rocket Lab in New Zealand in 2006 and built Electron into a workhorse of small-satellite launch, with more than 260 satellites flown and over 1,700 spacecraft carrying Rocket Lab hardware. In March 2021 he announced Neutron, a methane-fueled rocket sized for the constellation and national-security missions Electron cannot lift.

What happened

Neutron's debut slipped repeatedly as the company prioritized reuse. On January 21, 2026, a first-stage fuel tank ruptured during a hydrostatic water-loading test, moving the planned first flight from mid-2026 to late 2026. In its August 10, 2026 Q2 filing, Rocket Lab said Stage 1 tank production is 'aligned with the target delivery of Neutron to the launch pad in Q4 2026' but that the window for an end-of-year launch 'is narrowing' — leaving a first flight in 2027 possible.

The delay has not deterred customers — backlog hit $2.36B, launch backlog passed 90 missions, and Kepler's dedicated Neutron flight (no earlier than 2028) is the newest booking.
