Fragment is a Paris-based, YC-backed startup building task-management and handoff software for operations teams in fintech (onboarding, compliance), letting companies increase automation under human supervision; it was acquired by conversational-AI company Sierra in April 2026.

Every company using AI still needs humans in the loop, so the software for the AI-human handoff is the product: start with fintech ops teams, then sell the layer on.

About $2M raised through its seed round (PitchBook estimate, per TechCrunch); acquisition terms undisclosed.

Fragment was founded in 2023 by Olivier Moindrot and Guillaume Genthial after the pair built internal tools at identity-verification company MetaMap that processed about 1 million verifications a month using a mix of automation and 300 human agents. They took the project through Y Combinator's Summer 2023 batch with the premise that every company using AI will need humans in the loop and software for the handoff between them.

With roughly $2M in seed funding per PitchBook's estimate, Fragment started by helping fintech operations teams with task management for manual processes such as onboarding and compliance, then layered automation on top under human supervision. In April 2026 the startup became part of Sierra's consolidation wave: Sierra had acquired Japan-based Opera Tech and voice-agent company Receptive AI in late March, and Fragment followed as its third public acquisition within weeks.

Fragment bet on the unglamorous layer — software for the AI-human handoff in operations teams — which is exactly what an agent platform like Sierra needed as it expanded beyond customer service.

The founders' MetaMap experience (1M verifications a month with automation plus 300 humans) gave them rare credibility on where AI and human review meet.

Geography was strategic: Sierra saw Europe as an early applied-AI market and needed local agent-development strength, making Paris-based Fragment a natural fit.

A ~$2M seed kept the company lean and acquirable: with no pressure to raise a growth round, the founders could sell on team and product rather than on revenue scale.

Timing did the rest: Sierra was already consolidating (two acquisitions in late March), so Fragment arrived as part of a deliberate buy-don't-build strategy rather than a one-off rescue.

In a consolidating AI market, a tiny team can matter as product-plus-talent: Fragment raised only ~$2M but its human-in-the-loop design and founders made it Sierra's French agent-development outpost.

As of 2026-09-06 Fragment no longer operates as an independent company: its founders joined Sierra's France-based agent-development team and the product work was folded into Sierra's platform, which continues to sell conversational AI to large enterprises. The deal stands as one of Sierra's three public acquisitions in early 2026, and no further Fragment-specific announcements have followed.
